There has never been a more exciting time to be an Animal Science major in the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In the next 40 years, the worldwide demand for food is expected to double. Our graduates will play key roles in meeting that need. The Department has internationally-recognized faculty who lead the resident instruction, extension and research programs in breeding and genetics, meat science, non-ruminant and ruminant nutrition, physiology, animal well-being, production and management. Species represented in these programs include beef cattle, dairy cattle, horses, poultry, swine, companion animals and laboratory animals. Students who graduate in Animal Science go into animal production, veterinary medicine, sales and marketing, research and a host of other career opportunities. Public academic institutions have a mission to provide unbiased science information – based on and informed by state-of-the-art research – in their education and outreach programs. A key challenge is to update and develop new educational materials that keep instructors/outreach experts and their courses/workshops at the cutting edge so these new technologies may be rapidly adopted by end-users. To address this challenge, our team has continued to develop a curriculum to meet the needs of advanced professionals and adult learners interested in continuing education, as well as students interested in pursuing formal academic degrees. Since its inception in October 1999, the Plant and Soil Sciences e-Library project, a learning object collaboration, has offered high-quality online learning.
