Our scholarship and teaching are informed by the basic tenet that language has the power to influence how we perceive the world and how others perceive us. As scholars, we explore how literature has engaged in imaginative ways with the pressing issues of its time, and we examine how discourse and rhetoric enable social engagement and ways of understanding that engagement. As writers, we create the literature that allows us to consider imaginatively the concerns of times past and present, and the role of writing itself. As teachers, we help our students enrich their understanding of their own society as well as of other cultures by exploring the profound role of stories and storytelling, by collaborating with others from multiple perspectives, and by creating texts that place their own views in conversation with those of others.

KU Department of Religious Studies

1300 Oread Ave

Religions have been and remain among the most powerful forces shaping human history. Their discourses and practices inform the way we perceive ourselves, those around us, and existence at large, even when we are not actively religious. They are central to understanding both what divides us and unites us. The academic study of religion is a trans-disciplinary endeavor to understand from an objective perspective how religious traditions shape the lives of their adherents, without seeking to promote or disprove any specific belief system. Religious Studies acquaints students with the diversity of religious cultures and introduces them to key methods and theories employed in their examination as "religion." Daniel B. Stevenson, Chair William Lindsey, Graduate Director Hamsa Stainton, Undergraduate Director

The Undergraduate Advising Center (UAC) works with students as their primary resource for academic advising information. While the UAC has advisors from across the curriculum, there may be times when you may have to consult with more than one person or office to have all of your questions answered. It is important to understand that the UAC is a resource center and that your advisor may refer you to others who have more detailed information to share with you. Students admitted to professional school programs are assigned an advisor in their particular school. Those students can, however, use the UAC's resources to supplement the advising their school provides. Academic advising is an important part of the learning process. UAC and departmental faculty and professional advisors are here to help students make effective academic choices. Advising is a partnership between students and caring members of the KU community.
