They were successful in that endeavor, but were also affected deeply by the suffering of tuberculosis victims. Realizing the most pressing need of the community, the Sisters expanded their original mission and began fund-raising to be able to establish a sanitarium.Their efforts paid off. They collected enough money to rent a six-bedroom brick cottage at Fourth and Polk Streets in January 1895. They equipped each room with two beds for tuberculosis patients and created quarters for themselves in the living room. St. Joseph's Sanitarium was born.

The Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center is the world's largest dedicated neurosurgical center and a leader in neurosurgical training, research, and patient care. Under the directorship of Dr. Robert Spetzler, the institution's unique capabilities and achievements are recognized internationally. The breadth of academic and clinical training at BNI is reflected by the number of patients worldwide who give us the opportunity to care for them. They receive their care in a 64-bed dedicated neurointensive care unit and 80-bed acute care unit. The Barrow operating theater is comprised of 11 dedicated ORs and 2 endovascular suites. Over 6,600 neurosurgical procedures are performed at BNI every year encompassing all subspecialties of neurosurgery. In addition, SJHMC is an accredited Level 1 trauma center and the BNI has recently expanded to the newly remodeled Phoenix Children's Hospital. The Creighton University School of Medicine’s regional campus in Phoenix, Arizona is located at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, a member of Dignity Health. It provides expanded clinical and research experiences for medical students while fulfilling a growing need for Catholic-based medical education in the western area of the United States. The Phoenix campus offers two full years of clinical training. St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center is a nationally recognized center for quality tertiary care, medical education and research. It includes the internationally renowned Barrow Neurological Institute, the Heart & Lung Institute, University of Arizona Cancer Center and a Level I Trauma Center. Greg Pafford, DDS Dr. Greg Pafford is proud to be a third generation Phoenician and dentist who along with his father and grandfather have had the privilege to serve the downtown Phoenix community for 90 years. He graduated with honors from Arizona State University and the University of the Pacific in 1986. Dr. Pafford was installed as the 105th President of the Arizona Dental Association (AzDA) on March 9, 2013 during the Association’s House of Delegates. Dr. Pafford was honored as Dentist of the year by the Arizona Dental Association in 2007. Dr. Pafford has served in numerous capacities for the Arizona Dental Association including President-elect and Secretary and has served as a member of the AzDA Board of Trustees since 2004. He has represented the AzDA at the American Dental Association’s House of Delegates for several years. He was also active in his local component society, the Central Arizona Dental Society. He served as Secretary of this local component of AzDA in 2000; served on its Board of Directors from 1997 to 2000, and as President in 2002. In addition, Dr. Pafford has been very active in the Arizona Dental Foundation – the charitable arm of AzDA -- where he served as President from 2008 to 2010. He has served as Chair of the Give Kids A Smile events from 2003 to 2013. Since 2007, the Arizona Dental Foundation has provided over $4 million in free dental care to vulnerable citizens throughout Arizona. His community volunteer activities include a big involvement with the Phoenix Boys & Girls Club. He has served on the Executive Council and Corporate Board since 1988. He is co-founder of the Phoenix Boys & Girls Club’s Dental Dave Pratt Dental Clinic; was President of this organization in 1998, and has served on its Corporate Board and as an Executive Council member. He is a current member of the Phoenix Rotary 100 Club and volunteers for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Dr. Pafford is an avid runner and has run over 20 marathons for local charities over the past 13 years. Dr. Pafford has a family dental practice in downtown Phoenix, which emphasizes individualized quality dental care and up to date innovative treatments to enhance your smile. He resides in Phoenix with his wife, Tracy Holter, and their two children, Jake, 7 and Kate, 18 months.
