We imagine, design and deliver programs to help people become more creative and innovative in how they think and learn. HFLI was founded in 2003 by The Henry Ford and Ford Motor Company Fund to equip students with the skills to imagine and innovate a brighter future and to make an effective transition from the classroom to college and beyond. We serve nearly 1,900 students and 175 staff members at our four urban Henry Ford Academies and engage a wide range of community partners to prepare learners to succeed in college, pursue a career of choice and address challenges with innovative thinking. Today, HFLI’s home base is still in the Detroit area, but we are advancing our commitment to redesign how people learn by sharing and evolving our model of success with schools, communities and businesses around the world through workshops and coaching. We partner with organizations around the world to empower young innovators and resourceful learners with the tools, skills and capacity to empathize, ideate, create and adapt as contributing members of thriving schools, communities, and workplaces. HFLI’s approach to redesigning how we learn includes Design Thinking, a creative problem solving process. HFLI, working with the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford University (“the d.school”), has refined the Design Thinking process to explicitly develop innovators and resourceful lifelong learners.

As a result of alcohol and drug addiction KEM was homeless on the streets of Detroit. After multiple stints in area treatment centers, shelters, hospitals, and even jail, KEM made the decision to get his life on track on July 23, 1990. Through faith in God, hard work, and support from family and friends, KEM has been in recovery for twenty four years. He is now a Grammy nominated recording artist that has sold millions of albums and has performed in front of audiences around the globe. KEM has used his talents and remarkable journey as a catalyst to inspire others facing similar struggles. In 2009, KEM Live @ Mack and Third was created as a benefit concert to: Increase funding for agencies providing services for the Detroit-area homeless population Collect canned goods and other non-perishables for homeless shelters and food banks in the economically depressed metro-Detroit area Provide medical services to the homeless and other underserved members of the community Raise awareness of the plight affecting the homeless population in metro-Detroit Over 20,000 people attended the free concert, 500 meals were served to the homeless, and over 40,000 canned foods and non-perishable items were collected for Detroit-area organizations and shelters. In 2011, the second KEM Live @ Mack & Third was held with the same goals and objectives. The event resulted in 100,000 canned goods collected, over 2,100 meals served to the homeless, and over 50,000 people in attendance at the free concert. The immense success of previous events prompted KEM to create a nonprofit organization that would serve as a much larger fundraising vehicle that offers year round support for programs that service the homeless population, those recovering from substance abuse, and victims of domestic violence. This will be accomplished through corporate sponsorships, large donor support, and fundraising efforts that engage the community. This vision is especially pertinent during today’s difficult financial times when funding has been cut for many essential programs and services. Mack and Third, Inc., a nonprofit organization, was created from this vision in 2012. The goal is to improve the quality of lives in Detroit and any place where individuals and organizations are in need. Goals The goals of the Mack and Third organization are: Raise funds, resources, and awareness through annual fundraisers, food drives, volunteer projects, public donations, and sponsorships Partner with organizations that have proven to be most effective at using their resources to make the most impact in their communities Teach, encourage, and promote a philanthropic spirit of giving locally, nationally, and globally After formation of the Mack & Third non-profit entity, the third concert was held on August 26, 2012 at Cass Park to support the local populace and provide much-needed medical and food assistance. Once again, it was an enormous success. With major sponsors like the DTE Foundation, Meijer, Lowe’s and Bank of America, an estimated 55,000 people attended, 130,000 canned goods were collected for area homeless shelters, 2500 gift bags containing toiletries and personal items were distributed and 1500 meals were served. In addition, through the generosity of Detroit’s hospital and health communities, innumerable health screenings for asthma, HIV, blood pressure, dental issues, diabetes, and oral head-and-neck cancer were conducted. Local media embraced the event, with promotional appearances around town, coverage on radio and television, in newspapers and magazines. The blessings continue to flow.

Blessings in a Backpack - Dearborn is a results-oriented non-profit program, designed to feed elementary school children in Dearborn, Michigan who may not have dependable access to food on the weekends. On each of the 38 weekends during the school year, Blessings in a Backpack provides elementary schoolchildren identified as at-risk of hunger with a bag of easy-to-prepare, shelf-staple food. For the 2013-2014 academic year, the program feeds over 200 children at DuVall, Long, Nowlin, Snow, and Whitemore-Bolles Elementary Schools. We hope to feed more children - and at more Dearborn schools - next year. In Dearborn Public Schools, over 12,000 children are on the Free and Reduced Price Meal Program. Hunger doesn't take a break on the weekends, and Blessings in a Backpack aims to fill in for those programs on days when students aren't at school to utilize them. Better test scores, improved reading skills, positive behavior, improved health and increased attendance have all been attributed to the success of Blessings in a Backpack. We would love to have your support, and there are a number of ways you can help. We are always looking for volunteers to help pack the food bags that go out each week. We would be thrilled to team up with you for a food drive to help us supplement food bags for those extended weekends and holidays that pop up more often than you think. And we are eager to hear your ideas for the future of the program. We're also raising funds to sustain and expand our program for the future. Thanks to the generous support of Meijer, Panera Cares and a host of community organizations, we're able to assemble the bags of food for just $2.08 per weekend. With a donation of $80, you can feed one child in your community for every weekend of the school year. We appreciate donations of any size, however, and 100% of your contributions go to the purchase of food for the students. All administrative costs for the Blessings in a Backpack organization are covered by a generous donor, and our local operating expenses are paid for by volunteers and supporting organizations. Blessings in a Backpack is a 501(c)(3) organization, and your donation is tax deductible. “Every day holds the possibility of a miracle” was the quote that sustained Louise Briody during her twelve challenging years with cancer. Louise’s determination to live every day with humor and grace inspired family, friends, co-workers and medical professionals. Louise was raised in Garden City, graduated from Garden City West, and met her husband while working at the world’s first Kmart. “I just met the most beautiful girl in the world”, Tim exclaimed after they met. He never dated another girl after that. It was 1965 and they were both 16 years old. Louise spent her entire professional career with Romulus Community Schools. Twelve year old granddaughter Sophia observed, “My grandma is my hero. She worked for 40 years and she loved going to work every day.” The time she spent with grandchildren was precious and brought meaning and joy in her retirement. Louise loved traveling, decorating, celebrating her Polish heritage and passing her faith and traditions on to her grandchildren. Though compromised with physical challenges Louise remained the center of strength for both the Stanisz family and the Briody clan. She was the planner and organizer of family holiday gatherings and reunions. She faithfully captured and recorded special times with photographs and messages. Louise is survived by her loving husband Tim; sons Tim Jr. (Aleka), and Steven; grandchildren Sophia, William, Ireland, Alex and Devon; brothers Frances, Jerome (Janet) and Jim (Brenda) Stanisz and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Visitation is Friday, July 18 from 4-7pm at the Howe Peterson Funeral Home on Michigan Ave. in Dearborn. Funeral Mass is Saturday, July 19 at 11am with visitation beginning at 10:30am at Sacred Heart Church on Michigan Ave. in Dearborn. Louise’s passion for reading led her family to establish The Louise M. Briody Foundation which provides books to public schools. Memorial tributes may be made to The Louise M. Briody Foundation, 710 A South Brady, Dearborn, MI 48124.

Our student organization has been designing new Formula SAE and Baja SAE racing cars since our founding days in 1994. The involved members are students completing their undergraduate or graduate degrees at the University of Michigan - Dearborn. The passion for motorsports, engineering, and competitive challenges are a few of the reasons that pull us into this activity and push us to explore the limits of what is learned theoretically. We implement this attained knowledge where the competition is at its highest levels possible, against hundreds of teams and thousands of students worldwide. In these collegiate competitions, having the knowledge to build a fast car is not the only necessary attribute. The entire process, from the brainstorming sessions to testing sessions, is like managing a business in a very competitive market. Proper administration of resources - goods/monetary/labor - is critical to survive, whereas proper communication, passion, dedication, and know-how are essential tools to succeed. The UMDRacing team’s character has all of the aforementioned attributes to be one of the most successful teams in the world. One of the many benefits our members acquire by being part of this organization is a training playground to prepare for a successful career in an evermore demanding and competitive environment. The long hours of designing and building these vehicles from scratch are well spent, but of course come with many challenges, particularly managing the time between classes, work, and family. Thousands of hours are spent collectively into the entire process of attaining a top performing vehicle, and the rewards are priceless.
