Center Location The Catholic Newman Center is located at 4805 Calhoun Rd., Houston, TX 77004. We are on the corner of Calhoun Rd and University Dr., across from the Recreation and Wellness Center. Our phone number is (713) 748-2529. We are open Monday-Thursday, and occasionally some Fridays. Ministry Team The Catholic Newman Center Ministry team consists of Father John Paul(our priest/campus director), Claire McMullin (campus minister), and Dolores Perez (office manager). I suggest that you introduce yourself to them and get to know them! They are all wonderful people that are always available to guide you in your faith. Mass During the school year, daily mass is offered at 12noon Monday-Thursday. For Sunday masses, we have a 10:45am offered year-round at the AD Bruce Religion Center. During the school year, there will also be a 6pm mass at the Catholic Newman Center. Sacraments Sacraments are always available to you. Usually you have to schedule Confession/Reconciliation with Father John Paul, but if he is free, he will be more than happy accommodate you. If you need to have RCIA, Baptism, First Communion, or Confirmation classes, please see Claire MCMullin. Retreats There are many retreats offered throughout the academic year. The two retreats that stand out are Bayou Awakening (one in fall and one in spring) and the Busy-Student Retreat (fall only). One major volunteer opportunity is the Alternative Spring Break (ASB) which takes place in the spring. The Busy-Student retreat is one is highly recommended for the busy student! It is usually held at the end of October and is compatible with your school schedule. It all takes place within one week. For this retreat, we have visiting priests and nuns who come to help. At the beginning of the week, you are assigned to a Spiritual Director who will meet with you once a day and help you integrate prayers and readings into your busy student life. This is great, especially if you are just transitioning into a new school. We also have Alternative Spring Break (ASB) that takes place during Spring Break. Join your pals and head off for a week of community service! What you can do at the Center You can pray, study, sleep, eat, hang out, and more! The Center has a chapel that houses the Blessed Sacrament. You can always walk in and pray, say the rosary, etc. Divine Mercy is usually prayed at 3pm in the chapel. There is also a full kitchen with a refrigerator and two microwaves. If you would like to cook, you would need to schedule a time with Dolores Perez because the kitchen is used for events. You can always store food in the refrigerator, but you would need to label it with your name and date. In regards to the microwaves, they are both available for use. The center also has plates, spoons, forks, knives, napkins, cups, etc. We only ask that you clean up after yourself if you use anything. We have a library where people usually study. It is a great place to concentrate because there is not much noise. The center has Wi-Fi, so you can connect to the internet via wireless electronics. If you need to charge your devices, there are many outlets to choose from. The center also has restrooms that you can use. There are many people that bring their blankets and sleep on the center's couches and chairs. Feel free to do so! Tired of studying? We have a ping-pong table and board games available. There is also a Nintendo 64 and a Game Cube that you can use. Every Friday we have lunch and fellowship after mass. Church Ministries Many church ministries are available for you to join and take part of. Music Ministry is very popular. If you play an instrument, or like to sing, then we want you in our Music Ministry. Please see our music director if you are interested. We have lectors, Eucharistic ministers, altar servers, and sacristans/acolytes. If you have done any of those, we would like you to continue serving at the Newman center by being trained. If you have NOT done any of those, and are interested, then we need you as well! This fall, we will hopefully begin training sessions for anyone interested in serving in any ministry, as well as developing a schedule for Sundays and Holy Days.
