The heritage of the state of South Carolina is such that South Carolina served as a portal for 40% of African and Caribbean slaves entering the country. These individuals brought with them a wealth of music traditions and identities. This history is in danger of being lost if we do not take action for preservation. The University of South Carolina is uniquely positioned to gather the history of African-American music for perpetuity. Our location as the flagship state university gives us the coverage of seven regional campuses in addition to our central campus in Columbia, the state’s capital. We share our knowledge and findings with any individual or organization in hopes that the spirit of collaboration will increase our discoveries to benefit the Center for Southern African-American Music and our goal of collecting, preserving and correlating the music of African-Americans in the South.
