Located at 515 South Water Street on the Providence waterfront in the building formerly occupied by Fish Co., The Whiskey Republic was developed by the team behind popular Boston establishments McGreevy’s 3rd Base Saloon and Revolution Rock Bar. We are pub-style restaurant and sports bar that blends Irish roots with rock and roll style. The building’s original exposed beam supports, concrete flooring and brick walls have all been restored. In addition, a full-service kitchen has been installed. The bar has been extended, more than 20 high-definition televisions will be added, and the stage has been upgraded to accommodate world-class, live entertainment.
We have been in business for over 30 years ! We are considered an Institution in the small city of Providence, RI. We have a great spot right on the waterfront overlooking the city and the Hurricane Barrier. We have been featured in a few movies and television shows, best known was "Something about Mary". At night we have one of the best views of the city and the "new" bridge. We take reservations for large parties and welcome you to plan birthdays, events, meetings at our spot. Snookers was established in 1989 in Providence’s jewelry district on the corner of Chestnut and Clifford Street in a second floor loft. The original Snookers was a pool hall with 20 pool tables, a game room and a snack bar serving concession type snacks and soft drinks. Eventually we added a small kitchen serving sandwiches and in 1992 gained a liquor license and installed our first bar. In 1994, Snookers transformed the game room into “The Green Room”, which hosted many upstart live bands and DJs as well as name acts. It became a hot spot for entertainment in the city for many years. Snookers has been a location of choice for motion picture films and has hosted many celebrities such as Ben Stiller, Matt Dillon, Orlando Bloom, Conan O’Brian, and Mo Vaughn to name a few. In 2009 Snookers closed its doors on Clifford Street and moved to its present home at 53 Ashburton Street, about a mile and a half away. The transformation of the building from the “Damiano Brothers Welding Company” to Snookers' beautiful new facility is dramatic. The interior is an eclectic mix of artwork, signage, movie memorabilia, and industrial artifacts from its previous life. The addition of 50 plus flat screens creates a sports bar scene unrivaled in RI. Fifteen professional quality pool tables, along with the official home of the New England Pool and Billiards Hall of Fame, make Snookers ground zero for the pool enthusiasts in N.E. Two full bars, a dining room and outdoor patio lend themselves to a hip, fun-filled atmosphere. Our kitchen serves a wide variety of generous portion dishes at very reasonable prices. We have private rooms that accommodate parties of 10 to 275 people, with a catering menu to satisfy any need. Built in 1902, the building was originally the Douglas Avenue Fire Station, home to Union Hook and Ladder Company Number Three. Upon entering the establishment, you will be captured by the antique reception and service tables which once served as dressers to the firemen stationed in the barracks over one hundred years ago. Your eyes will then be drawn to the captivating nine-foot canvas painting- done by Providence's own Ian M. Gaudreau displayed in the rear of the restaurant. The image portrays a striking representation of the door's original use: to transport horses out to graze and back in to pull the ladder wagon at the sound of the bell. The bar, a detailed relic of centuries past, was constructed out of solid mahogany in Chicago in 1888 and has served saloon patrons from San Francisco to Nevada to Arizona. We discovered the vintage treasure in a storage area in Denver and had it transported 2,000 miles to Providence. Sit at the bar and enjoy it in its original beauty, with the exception of several bullet holes the structure endured over 100 years ago.
