Friends Association -- We recently adopted a second local philanthropy, The Friends Association for Children. FRIENDS works to create an area solution for children and their families living in areas of Richmond, Virginia where the support from the community to succeed is necessary. The Friends Association serves over 3,500 low and moderate income residents in Richmond, Virginia each year with subsidized services. Virginia Commonwealth University is a public research university located in Richmond, Virginia. VCUarts Cinema is a 3 year, production-intensive undergraduate program that prepares students for careers in the professional commercial and independent film industries. Students self-produce 35mm short films, and work hands-on with state of the art film making equipment under the guidance of a seasoned faculty. The program is headed by Dr. Rob Tregenza, who has written and directed three features including "Inside/Out" (1997); produced by Jean-Luc Godard and screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival. We believe sociology is a foundational discipline supporting the liberal-arts tradition. The sociological lens provides a powerful analytical tool for explaining, predicting, and understanding human behavior. Sociological insights can be applied to virtually every type of group setting, ranging from families, marriages, and small groups to institutions, organizations, and nations. Originally known as the “science of society,” sociology is especially relevant for the analysis of the causes and consequences of inequality, power and social change in local and global landscapes. We are therefore convinced that students of sociology are in a special position to help to improve the quality of human life.
The VCU Percussion Studio is comprised of undergraduate students majoring in music at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. Members of the VCU Percussion Studio are trained in all areas of modern percussion - contemporary solo repertoire, symphonic percussion, world/hand percussion, drum set, and chamber music. The studio members gain a wealth of performance opportunities through participation in the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, VCU Symphony Orchestra, University Band, and in the VCU Percussion Ensemble.
