University Hall is the oldest original building on the Northwestern University campus in Evanston, Illinois, and the second building to have been constructed after Old College, which stood on campus until the 1970s. The building has served a wide range of different roles since its construction, and currently houses the university's English department.HistoryUniversity Hall was designed in Victorian Gothic style by Gurdon P. Randall, and is composed of Joliet limestone - the same kind used to build the Chicago Water Tower. The construction materials were transported to the Evanston campus by lake boat and rail. The cornerstone of the building was laid in 1868, and the structure was completed in 1869, at a total cost of $125,000. University Hall officially opened on September 8, 1869 and coincided with the inauguration of University President Erastus Otis Haven. Speakers at the opening ceremony included Illinois Governor John M. Palmer, and the new University President Haven, who called the structure, "the new and elegant University Building". The clock in the tower of University Hall was the gift of the Class of 1879; its movement was built by clockmaker Seth Thomas. In 1966, a new electrified clock replaced the old works, which are now located in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C..

Based on the belief that breakthroughs in complex systems require collaboration across boundaries of traditional domains, NICO brings together faculty in business, engineering, education, medicine, natural sciences, and social sciences. Cross-disciplinary collaborations break down barriers due to disciplinary knowledge silos and domain-specific terminology, accelerating the development of the new science of complex systems.

Students at Northwestern may take a variety of courses pertaining to the histories, political experiences, cultural and material expressions, and intellectual traditions of Latinas and Latinos living in the United States. In referring to US Latinas/os we mean the wide diversity of communities, cultures, and backgrounds from all parts of the United States and their complex relationships to diasporic homelands. Our courses benefit from the wealth of Latina/o communities that reside and flourish in Chicago yet we also look at the experiences of Latina/o communities throughout the United States. Courses may discuss the realities of Puerto Rican and Mexican communities in Chicago, second generation Dominicans in New York, or generations of Mexican Americans in Houston. Our curriculum engages in the productive tension between the common interests and differences affecting US Latinas/os. Students may expect to explore such commonalities/ differences in areas such as social movements, transnationalism, electoral politics, race and comparative processes of racialization, immigration, queer theory, gender and sexuality language and identity, and cultural and artistic expressions

(847) 491-2706

The Harvey Kapnick Business Institutions Program (BIP) minor that is open to all Northwestern undergraduates regardless of major or home school. BIP is based on the assumption that the study of business can be approached through a thoughtful investigation of the cultural, political, philosophical, literary, and social sources and consequences of business institutions. Therefore the program is not intended to be pre-professional training or to function as a business concentration within any single departmental major. It is conceived as a broad, multidisciplinary perspective on a significant area of inquiry. Students who wish to pursue the minor in business institutions should be open to the intellectual approaches of many disciplines. There is no application process; interested students should come in for an advising appointment and to fill out the declaration paperwork. Kapnick BIP is a part of the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern and is supervised by a faculty committee and chaired by the director, Mark Witte. The program office is located at 2010 Sheridan Road, on Northwestern University's Evanston, Illinois campus. Kapnick BIP is grateful for the support provided by Harvey Kapnick family, Robert P. Saltzman, Combe family and the Chris Galvin Entrepreneurial award. Contributions from these individuals have provided for classes, seminars, symposia, and other special events that enhance the program. Kapnick BIP adds a unique dimension to Northwestern University. These partners help keep our program vital and active. WE THANK YOU!

The ASP major and minor enable students to gain a sophisticated critical understanding of Asia. At the same time, ASP students learn to interrogate the world and themselves through the lens of another language and culture. Like all Northwestern students, ASP students hone their aptitude for asking good questions and analyzing problems, conducting research, and effectively presenting ideas in writing or in speech. Such skills, knowledge, and habits of mind are the hallmarks of a rigorous liberal arts education at a great university like Northwestern. These abilities provide a foundation for success in a wide range of careers. Some of our graduates go on to law, management, or medical schools with the intention of practicing their professions abroad where they can make use of their specialized area knowledge. Others move directly into jobs with schools, businesses, media, government, or non-profit organizations. Some go on to graduate study in the humanities, social sciences, or the natural or life sciences—perhaps with a continuing focus on Asia—with the aim of working in academe or of pursuing one of a myriad of possible career paths. Some graduates work primarily in Asia or elsewhere overseas, while others remain in North America or live and work in a variety of places. On the whole, our graduates enjoy career success in an array of professions.

Northwestern’s graduate programs stand at the forefront of their respective research fields. With so much groundbreaking research taking place here at Northwestern, it is increasingly important to convey the results of that research clearly and concisely to a broad variety of audiences–from expert to general. Not only are such communication skills a vital component of conveying one's message, they require diligent practice in order to become second-nature. With this in mind, the Ready, Set, Go program was founded in 2012. The goals of the program are to increase awareness for the urgent need for excellent science communicators and to coach graduate and post doc researchers to improve their own presentation skills. The program focuses on three important and basic components of communication: building confidence in all communication roles, enhancing the clarity of the message, and forming a connection with any audience.
