Embarking on its sixth season of producing immersive site-specific opera, On Site Opera (OSO) has established itself as one of New York City’s most imaginative, nimble opera companies by doing more than simply staging musically and dramatically rich works outside of the opera house. OSO’s team of General & Artistic Director, Eric Einhorn, Music Director, Geoffrey McDonald, and Executive Director & Producer, Jessica Kiger have pushed the boundaries of operatic storytelling, producing operas in locations that allow singers and audiences alike to immerse themselves in the narrative. Reviewing the first chapter of The Figaro Project, in which OSO is staging lesser-known operatic adaptations of French playwright Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais’ (1732-1799) famed trilogy of Figaro plays, Anthony Tommasini of The New York Times wrote, “This visionary company could be on to something big.” He also noted that the “space proved ideal for the intrigues of the opera.” OSO has presented Shostakovich at The Bronx Zoo, Gershwin at Harlem’s legendary Cotton Club, Rameau at Madame Tussauds New York and the Lifestyle-Trimco mannequin showroom, Paisiello at Fabbri Mansion, as well as a site-specific workshop of Clarimonde, a new work by Frederic Chaslin and P.H. Fisher. Committed to exploring new technology in opera, OSO implemented the first-ever Google Glass supertitles during its 2014 run of Rameau’s Pygmalion, of which The Verge reported “Few things seem like obvious fits for Google Glass so far, but this is one of them.” Founded in 2012, On Site Opera is dedicated to producing site-specific opera in non-traditional venues throughout New York. OSO molds its productions to specific locations using physical space to create an environment in which the concept, storytelling, music, and performers unite to form an immersive, cohesive, and meaningful whole.

Our artists and ambassadors take on artistic voice in a unique approach to empowerment and leadership by addressing issues of: • Social Unrest–by demonstrating that coming-of-age and activism define and shape individual lives; • Intolerance–by collaborating as proactive allies in the peace-building process; • Peer Pressure–by encouraging young minds to discover their values and identity deepening their understanding of and compassion for others; • Life in a “Virtual World”–by demonstrating that social media can’t replace face-to-face dialogue and fosters the understanding that a personal profile not only reflects their chosen perception of themselves, but it determines their perception by others. Berlin was selected for our initial breaking walls initiative because the vision of dismantling the Berlin Wall inspired breaking walls to dream even larger than Bethlehem & Brooklyn. Over nine-days 16 new artists from Bethlehem, Brooklyn and Berlin experienced the writing-performing workshop as well as face-to-face dialogue while touring Berlin together. The most exciting aspect of the Berlin workshop was the writing/performing was led by six Brooklyn and Bethlehem ambassadors who were cast members of both documentaries. breaking walls is proud that our 2014 partner was Rainbow Dreams Trust in Cape Town, South Africa. Our initiative assisted 12 Cape Town young men and women, ages 13-17, to build a creative community with the artists from Brooklyn, Bethlehem and Berlin through writing about issues of isolation, self-esteem, and the legacy of apartheid. breaking walls 2014 Cape Town saw the initiation of a strong, grassroots peacebuilding component. The U.S. Consulate hosted a Skype meeting between Ambassador Anwarul Chowdhury of the Global Movement for the Culture of Peace and our breaking walls artists and ambassadors. Ambassador Chowdhury spoke to our youth about the important role they can play in building a peaceful world, starting with breaking down the walls each of carry in our hearts. Ambassador Chowdhury guided a passionate Q & A session and, inspired the creation of our first annual breaking walls Peace & Tolerance Statement. Building on this foundation Brooklyn breaking walls artist, Jabari Ashe, led the creation of a “Do an act of peacebuilding” video for the International Day of Peace; as he and 20 NYCDOE high school students to attend the General Assembly’s High Forum on the Culture of Peace as guests of Ambassador Chowdhury.: LINKS: ATTACHMENTS. breaking walls 2015 will happen in Barcelona, Spain from July 21 thru July 31. The initiative will again consist of community building, creative writing, creation of a Theater Piece, and a culminating performance for a live audience; plus, the opportunity to share face-to-face dialogue and life experiences as an ensemble group. breaking walls 2015 Barcelona will begin with a series of three Skype sessions between March and June 2015. These sessions will break down the walls between all the delegations; and, initiate the community building and creative writing that are integral to breaking walls. The 26 artists and 7 ambassadors from Brooklyn, Bethlehem, Berlin, Cape Town and Barcelona will come together to write around issues of economic disparity, high youth unemployment, low self-esteem, and how to shape a tolerant, peaceful world. breaking walls ultimately expects to create an international community of emerging creative artists and empathic leaders who will know how to use writing and live theater performance as effective tools to: • Cope with environments of chaos and conflict; • Effect artistic and personal transformation that leads to lasting social change; • Effect understanding and empathy on a personal, neighborhood, community, national and international level; • Use their empathy as positive role models and change-makers as educators, lawyers, law enforcement officers, diplomats, community leaders, parents and life-long learners. breaking walls impact will be based in connecting underrepresented teens from inner city Brooklyn, New York with international groups of at-risk teens, to: • Enable disenfranchised teens to tap their most protected places to write with rare honesty and to use writing as tool for personal/social change in a nine-day writing/performing initiative; • Sustain and expand an on-going, long-term breaking walls initiative “Hub” based in Brooklyn to create a core of artists to collaborate and facilitate community-based and international initiatives with their peers; • Establish long-term, sustainable breaking walls initiatives within each of our partnering communities. As breaking walls enables disenfranchised teens to tap their most protected places to write with rare honesty and to use writing and theater as tools for personal/social change . . . • 2014 Brooklyn artist, Jabari Ashe, changes his major to Social Work so he Can make a difference to the younger kids in my neighborhood; • 2014 Cape Town artist, Sanda Sulani, realizes breaking walls showed him English is the universal language that I need to read, write and speak so that I can succeed in every aspect of my life – especially making a difference in my community; • 2012 and 2014 Brooklyn artist, Alleah Johnson, mentors our Cape Town girl artists; • 2012 and 2014 Berlin artists, Martha Crowe and Neha Dutt, prepare to facilitate a breaking walls initiative in Berlin. This initiative will match youth at the Nelson Mandela Schule with youth from the Syrian and Iraq immigrant community; • 2014 Cape Town initiative assistant, Nick Sylvester, explores joining the Peace Corps because There is so much more to life than working 9-5. I want to continue to make a difference; • 2012 and 2014 breaking walls ambassador, Mahmoud Abu Srour, who dreams of serving Palestine as a diplomat, purses an internship with the Palestinian Foreign Service. • 2012 and 2014 breaking walls Bethlehem ambassador, Mohammad Abu Srour , posted this statement and a 117-image photo breaking walls 2014 Cape Town album on his Facebook: Being a part of the breaking walls project as a Palestinian means getting new friends and also having the chance to travel around the world and teach my new friends respect and stop them from taking wrong decisions in life that could have a bad impact on their future life. My mission is to let the peace in my heart reach out to every single man and woman on this planet... We expect our 2015 Barcelona artists to lead the future shaping of their communities and the larger world as their Cape Town counterparts are. breaking walls is considering future partnerships with youth in Detroit (2016), Bogota (2017) and Warsaw (2018).

Many of the young people in the Saturday Program come from schools in which they are mainstreamed. Some are the only Deaf or Hard of Hearing people in their schools. This may lead to a sense of isolation and a feeling of being "different." Other Saturday Program participants attend schools for the Deaf where sign language is used, but they have no family members or friends who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. In each situation, these young people do not have sufficient opportunities to interact with their Deaf and Hard of Hearing Peers during leisure time. The Saturday Program provides a great environment for these young people to play and learn with others like themselves. The camaraderie and sense of belonging that is gained through the Saturday Program helps participants build self-confidence and social skills. A number of the Saturday Program staff are Deaf themselves. These adults serve as role models and mentors for the young people in the program.

RISC Training

C/O the Half King, 505-507 West 23rd St
New York, NY 10011

Journalist Sebastian Junger founded RISC in 2011 after his close friend and colleague, acclaimed photographer Tim Hetherington, died while covering hostilities in Libya from wounds suffered in a mortar attack. While Hetherington's injuries were serious, Junger later learned from a combat medic that first aid might have saved his life during the short ride to the hospital. But none of the journalists traveling with him were trained in first aid. Nor are the majority of journalists covering conflict today. RISC seeks to change that. We train and equip freelance journalists in all media to treat life-threatening injuries on the battlefield. Freelancers comprise the vast majority of those who cover wars, and consequently make up the vast majority of deaths and injuries. Surviving a gunshot or shrapnel wound is often a matter of doing the right thing in the first few minutes, and RISC's training focuses on that brief, critical period of time. It is our hope to make first aid training the industry norm - like having a flak jacket or sat phone - and to prevent unnecessary deaths in a job that is so vital to human dignity and human rights. RISC is a 501(c)(3) organization. To learn more or make a donation, visit us at www.risctraining.org. We're also on Twitter @risctraining.

Though Martha Graham herself is the best-known alumna of her company, having danced from the Company's inception until the late 1960's, the Company has provided a training ground for some of modern dance's most illustrious performers and choreographers. Former members of the Company include Merce Cunningham, Erick Hawkins, Pearl Lang, Elisa Monte, Paul Taylor, Glen Tetley, Jacqulyn Buglisi, Donlin Foreman and Pascal Rioult. Among celebrities who have joined the Company in performance are Mikhail Baryshnikov, Claire Bloom, Margot Fonteyn, Liza Minnelli, Rudolf Nureyev, Maya Plisetskaya, and Kathleen Turner. "One of the great companies of the world," according to Anna Kisselgoff, former chief dance critic of The New York Times, the Martha Graham Dance Company has been lauded by critics throughout the world. Alan M. Kriegsman of the Washington Post referred to the Company as "one of the seven wonders of the artistic universe," while Los Angeles Times critic Martin Bernheimer noted, "They seem able to do anything, and to make it look easy as well as poetic." Ismene Brown of The Daily Telegraph, London, touted the Martha Graham Dance Company's performance as "Unmissable," and for Donald Richie of Japan Times these dancers were "Graham's perfect instrument."
