Cooke's of Dublin is our counter service restaurant here at Raglan Road, serving traditional fish’n’chip's, tasty pies and other traditionally inspired dishes. Cooke's of Dublin only uses the freshest of fish and coats it with a special light batter that has been a family secret for generations. We do things the same way it was done back in the 1930s. It is the Cooke family way, highest standards, no compromises, ever. The Original Cooke's of Dublin was founded by George Edward Cooke in 1934; it was located at 46 South Richmond Street in Dublin City. A bustling neighbourhood restaurant, while the sign over the door read “Georges Cafe” it was known locally as Cooke's. A modest premises with church pews as seats, it served only the freshest of fish bought daily from the Dublin Fish Markets, as was tradition it was closed on Mondays, no fish market on a Monday mean’t no fresh fish! A well-deserved day off for the family. Machinery was not the thing back then, so all the preparation was by hand, including peeling and cutting tons of potatoes for chips! The family lived over the shop, so the large family of younger Cooke’s first introduction to the business was peeling spuds! The huge and industrial fish and chip fryer unlike today was solid fuelled, a significant undertaking to keep it lit during a busy night. While Ireland was neutral during the Second World War, it was known as “The Emergency” fuel was in short supply, so the family spent a lot of the summer in the bogs around the Dublin mountains cutting turf from the peat bogs to endure that the image would stay lit and that Dubliners would not be deprived of their favourite supper, Fish and Chips from “Cooke's” of South Richmond Street, Dublin. A tradition we proudly carry on today. Cooke’s also boasts its own outdoor bar & seating area called The Hole in the Wall, where happy hour is every day between 3-7pm. So next time you are in the Downtown Disney area and you fancy a quick bite and a cool drink drop in and check us out, we’d love to see you.
