As a unit within Texas State, we provide a liberal education with emphasis on cultural values by offering special course work in the arts and humanities. Old Main is a red-roofed Victorian Gothic building on the campus of Texas State University. Situated at one end of the quad, it was Texas State's first building, built in 1903, and remained the only building on campus until 1908. Old Main was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1983. It currently houses the offices for the School of Journalism and Mass Communication as well as the College of Fine Arts.Design and constructionE. Northcraft designed the building for Southwest Texas State Normal College (now Texas State University) in 1902. The building was dubbed "Main" as it was the only building on the campus when it was opened for classes in the Fall of 1903. The original design included an auditorium and chapel on the second floor with an ornate cathedral ceiling, stage and balcony. When construction began, multiple loads of concrete were poured for the foundation which disappeared into the ground. A cave under the site of the building was discovered and had to be plugged before the foundation could really be set.Once other buildings began opening on campus to hold classes, the building was used as the university's administration building.1972 - PresentIn 1972, the interior of the building was renovated and the chapel ceiling was restored. Following completion of this work the building was rededicated and officially became "Old Main." During this renovation, the auditorium on the second floor was partitioned into smaller rooms.In 1988, a renovation added a floor at the balcony level. This renovation maintained the ornate ceiling which was visible on the new third floor. The most recent renovations in 1993 and 1994 restored the original color and style roof of the building.Today, Old Main at Texas State holds the College of Fine Arts and Communication along with the School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

The Albert B. Alkek Library is the main central library of Texas State University. The Wittliff collections of Southwestern Writers and Southwestern & Mexican Photography is located on the seventh floor of the Alkek LibraryThe university's library was named, in 1991, for an alumnus who became an oilman, rancher, and philanthropist, Albert B. Alkek. The Albert B. Alkek Library serves as the main, central academic library supporting the Texas State University (then called Southwest Texas State University) community. As a storehouse for United States and Texas government documents, the library receives a large number of government publications from the state and 60% of all federal publications. The mission of the library, as stated by University Officials, "is to help our patrons succeed by providing high quality library services and information in a variety of formats to support the university's teaching and research programs."Among the Library's seven floors, students encounter over 1.5 million printed texts, over 2 million microfilm & audio-visual materials, 546,700 electronic books, 471 databases, 110,800+ electronic journals, University Archives, and curriculum materials approved by the Texas Education Agency for primary and secondary schools. In addition to the vast amount of resources, the Library encompasses niche collections which are rare to the University. These holdings include The Witliff Collections housed on the Library's seventh floor, the King of the Hill archives, major work of significant writers such as Cormac McCarthy, Sandra Cisneros and Sam Shepard, and the Lonesome Dove collection.

Located adjacent to Jones Dining Hall and San Jacinto Residence Hall, The Tower is a nine story high-rise facility. It's suite-style layout offers two, double-occupancy bedrooms by a shared bath. A portion of Tower Hall is dedicated to the Business Learning Community, Future Teachers Learning Community, Mass Communication & Journalism Learning Community, Pre-Med/Pre-Dental Learning Community, Psychology Learning Community, Terry Scholars Learning Community, and Career Exploration Learning Community. Residents accepted into these programs are assigned to various sections of Tower Hall and benefit from frequent study groups and special events associated with their declared majors.

The Department of Housing and Residential Life provides students with a safe, comfortable and convenient living environment while offering opportunities for increased campus involvement, social interaction and academic assistance.

Located conveniently near the Alkek Library and the LBJ Student Center, Elliott has three separate buildings, two for student rooms and one for community functions. The outdoor shaded courtyard is a popular hangout for Elliott residents.

Christ Chapel is the campus ministry at Texas State University-San Marcos, sponsored by the Episcopal and Lutheran churches. It is based at the UCM-Wesley/Christ Chapel Building. All university students, faculty, and friends are welcome.

Our Department consists of about 40 faculty and staff members who welcome all students and strive to maintain a close contact and cooperation with them. We offer a full range of undergraduate and graduate programs including pre-engineering, teaching certifications, and applied mathematics.

As a liberal arts discipline, the department offers two undergraduate degrees, an undergraduate degree in Political Science (B.A. POSI) and an undergraduate degree in Public Administration (BPA). In addition, we offer three graduate degrees including a M.A. in Political Science (M.A. POSI), a M.A. in Legal Studies (M.A. LS), and a Master of Public Administration (MPA). We are the academic home for about 800 undergraduate majors and minors and 380 graduate students. We also offer graduate certificates in Mediation and Paralegal Studies. We house the Center for Research, Public Policy, and Training (CRPPT) and the Armed Forces and Society Journal.

The Academic Advising Center provides accurate and timely advice to prospective and current students regarding their progress toward completion of degree programs administered by the college. Services include preparation of degree audits, assistance with degree planning, scheduling of classes, counseling for probation and suspension holds, and application for graduation. The School Psychology Program at Texas State University prepares students to become skilled clinicians and problem solvers, serving children, schools, and families. Coursework in the areas of school-based psychoeducational assessment, counseling, and consultation build competencies for professional practice as a Licensed Specialist in School Psychology. The Program offers related training in the areas of brain behavior relationships, the educational needs of culturally and linguistically diverse learners, and the assessment of social, behavioral, and emotional functioning. Our 69-hour Specialist in School Psychology (SSP) program is approved by the National Association of School Psychologists. Graduates are eligible to apply for licensure from the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists and certification as a Nationally Certified School Psychologist from the National School Psychology Certification Board.

Alkek Teaching Theater represents the crossroads for integrated media and large classrooms. The diverse array of media allows for a creative teaching and learning environment.
