Tartan Day on Ellis Island is one of the principal Scottish heritage events in the United States. The event debuted in 2002 and is presented free-of-charge to the general public. It is produced by the Clan Currie Society. Ellis Island is a fitting place to observe Tartan Day. The island and its historic buildings represent America's "Golden Door." From 1892 to 1954, more than 12 million immigrants passed through Ellis Island. Although many Scots arrived during the colonial period of our history – helping to build the new nation - an additional half-million Scots came through Ellis Island. It has been estimated that 40% of Americans today can trace at least one ancestor's entry into the United States through Ellis Island. Describing the program, noted Scottish journalist and author Roddy Martine reported that of all the Tartan Day events held in the United States, the Ellis Island observance has, "stood out as a beacon of what USA Tartan Day is all about: the emigrant ancestors of ordinary Americans who over three centuries crossed the Atlantic Ocean to create the world's greatest democracy." Tartan Day on Ellis Island began its successful collaboration with the Ellis Island Immigration Museum in 2002 in the coordination and sponsorship of their first Tartan Day celebration. That year, Ellis Island Tartan Day organizers and the National Museums of Scotland joined forces to host the traveling exhibit, "Home and Away: Highland Departures and Returns." Subsequent programs have included exhibitions on the Jacobites and America, the Life and Legacy of John Muir, A Celebration of Tartan and Scots in the American West. These celebrations also feature performances by a whole host of Scottish artists including pipers and drummers, Highland dancers, fiddlers, jugglers and harpists to name a few. A new Ellis Island Tartan© was commissioned in 2011 to mark the 10th Anniversary of Tartan Day on Ellis Island. Each color in the tartan reflects upon the American immigrant experience. The blue represents the ocean that had to be crossed to reach the American shores. The copper-green is the color of the Statue of Liberty. The red depicts the bricks of the Ellis Island buildings where 12 million Americans took their first steps towards freedom. The gold is the golden door that is the United States of America and the dawn of a new life in America. Brian Wilton, director of the Scottish Tartans Authority in Crieff, Scotland said: "As the first American footfall for millions of emigrants —including hundreds of thousands of Scots—Ellis Island plays an extremely important part in many family histories. It is entirely appropriate that all those whose American origins were born there should be able to celebrate and commemorate that momentous occasion by wearing the new Ellis Island Tartan.” The 2011 event may very well be the largest Tartan Day event in the world with an estimated 70 thousand visitors* coming to Ellis Island. *National Park Service figures
TRAINING Training is the cornerstone of the P.A.L. program. It is well known that training shelter dogs makes them more attractive potential family members to adopters, prepares them for a happy, respectful life in their new homes, and provides adopters with the tools to build loving and respectful relationships with their new dogs. P.A.L. volunteers, led by certified dog trainer Laura Garber, CPDT-KA, of WoofGang, LLC, conduct weekly training sessions with shelter dogs that target the particular needs of each dog. If you’re interested in joining the training effort, visit http://libertyhumane.org/pitbulls_are_loving.php for more information, then email Elizabeth Hoch at [email protected] or call LHS at (201) 547-4147 to register for the P.A.L. training class, which is held Tuesday evenings at 6:30pm. PRE- & POST-ADOPTION COUNSELLING There are challenges when adopting any dog into a new home. The P.A.L. program offers counselling to adopters before and after adoption. P.A.L. volunteers make periodic follow-ups with adopters to assure that the dog is settling in well to the home, and P.A.L. trainer Laura Garber, CPDT-KA, of WoofGang offers personalized guidance and counselling to adopters. EDUCATION & OUTREACH Pit Bulls are an historically maligned breed about which many myths exist. The P.A.L. program seeks to dispel these myths and advocate for the breed through education. If you are seeking more information about the Pit Bull breed, the P.A.L. website is a great place to start! DISSEMINATION OF RESOURCES & ACTIVITIES Nowadays it’s rare that we ask our dogs to do the work for which their breed was intended. Canine sports and activities – such as pet therapy, obedience and agility trials, and weight pull competitions – are not only fun but also foster relationship-building. P.A.L. can help you get involved in these pursuits! This mission came to fruition in 2008 when, through the work of the P.A.L. program, Liberty Humane Society's mascot, Sweets, was the first dog to receive the AKC's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Award. The CGC is given to dogs who illustrate they possess the temperament and obedience required to exist peacefully with the environment around them. It was an achievement about which P.A.L. is still very proud!

Hello Guys! Hope all of you are well. I have a favor to ask you guys. Please hear my out.... Recently, there was a super typhoon Yolanda that hit Philippines Friday of last week. It did epic catastrophic damage all over central Philippines. As you have seen, Tacloban City and Palo are the cities where the eye of the typhoon hit and that is where majority of my family lives. They are now homeless and not even sure if all are alive or injured. It is difficult to get in contact with them which is very heartbreaking for all of us. It is difficult. I did hear a lot of them are alive, but their homes are unstable. We are still waiting to hear from more; hoping they are alive. Tacloban City itself is inhabitable. Shootings, looting, diseases and decaying bodies everywhere. The stench is unforgettable. I have little cousins who don't deserve to see this and they are scarred for life. I am contacting you guys if you can please help aid both my families to escape this hell. I asking from the bottom of my heart if you can please financially help us to remove them from Tacloban to Cebu or Manila to have a peace of mind and heal from this. Any amount would be appreciated. The more the better. My family is very large and they all need your help. I hope you guys can understand and assist my family. God bless
Since 1974, the Educational Arts Team, a private nonprofit organization, has developed and conducted countless educational and social workshops for children and families and teachers. The Team's unique approach of responding to community needs and requests from educators, by integrating the arts into the educational curriculum, has led to a high demand for their workshop programs. Through collaboration with the school districts, community-based organizations and foundation and corporate sponsors, the Educational Arts Team offers a menu of in-school and after-school workshop programs for children and families and operates a popular summer arts camp located near Liberty State Park. The Educational Arts Team has recently expanded beyond Jersey City to include school districts in Hudson and Essex counties. The Team provides a range of programs to meet the needs of elementary schools and the community including workshops for students K-12 and professional development workshops for teachers. The programs use age-appropriate drama, writing, storytelling, puppetry, music, dance and visual art activities as strategies for promoting learning, teaching basic academic subject areas, encouraging positive social experiences and promoting positive relationships.
AAU Travel Team Program The Boys & Girls Club Mack/Cali Basketball Travel Team Program has won 32 AAU State Championships. Our teams have placed 1st, 2nd, 5th, 6th, 7th, 11th and 12th in the nation. The Travel Team Program prides itself on the quality of the instruction our players receive. Our coaches provide the expertise and supervision that parents and their children desire. Parents have the confidence their children are being instructed by adults who are teaching them about life as well as basketball. In every community, boys and girls are left to find their own recreation and companionship in the streets. An increasing number of children are at home with no adult care or supervision. Young people need to know that someone cares about them.
Arts to Grow bridges the gap between arts education and shrinking school district budgets by providing Teaching Artists and research-based curriculum to produce future leaders and strengthen local communities at no cost to working families. Arts to Grow launched its first three programs in September 2005. Since then, our portfolio of program partners has grown to 17 programs in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, Hoboken (NJ), and Newark (NJ). Thanks to our sponsors and volunteers, we’ve had the opportunity to offer over 108 high quality programs and serve over 2,500 children. Students’ artistic talents are nurtured by ATG’s experienced Teaching Artists, a specific curriculum created for each class, and a 1:12 teaching artist to student ratio. Over 35 highly qualified teaching artists have worked with ATG to instill self-confidence and a love of learning in our students.
