BARSMITH LAUNCHES AUDACIOUS, ADVENTUROUS EVENING OF MUSIC & ART: LAYLOW LayLow, a bold, new approach to the club scene, is being launched Wednesday, September 26 downstairs at Barsmith, and its architect host DJ Ellery says guests won’t be hearing the same old sounds heard at other Valley clubs. “LayLow will really be an adventure – an auditory extension of my peers – set in an atmosphere where culture and style live on the forefront of music and art,” says Ellery, who is known locally for his forays into new musical techniques. The concept echoes the intimate ambiance others enjoy at small clubs in New York, Los Angeles and London. He adds the emphasis will be on building an underground collective of DJs and artists, visionaries who are creating the next facets of the musical/visual continuum. Guest DJs will be booked regularly as well as occasional visual artists to dazzle club guests. “Ultimately, LayLow provides a platform for local, national and global talent that is pushing the club culture forward,” he says. “Anyone who wants to hear the next big thing will be excited and happy, as LayLow targets forward-thinking lovers of great music!” Barsmith, 130 E. Washington, Phoenix, is located just off the METRO line in downtown Phoenix. Laylow start at 9 p.m. and ends at 2 a.m. Wednesday. There will be drink specials, but no cover before 10:30 p.m. For more information, check out LayLow on Facebook.
The Orpheum Theatre Phoenix, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has made more than its fair share of history with the many diverse performances it has placed in the spotlight. Vaudeville – Built in 1929 as premier vaudeville house, the Orpheum was the last major construction project in Phoenix before the onset of the Great Depression. Motion pictures - When moving pictures began to dominate the performing arts, the Orpheum earned the nickname, “The Grand Dame of Movies.” Broadway Performances - During a 1960s resurgence, Broadway stars and shows of the highest caliber graced its stage. Restoration – In 1997, following a 12-year, $14 million restoration project the Orpheum Theatre Phoenix secured its place as the quintessential Phoenix entertainment venue.
Center Dance Ensemble is led by Artistic Director Fran Cohen, trained by Martha Graham. The company performs four MainStage productions at the Herberger Theater, including the popular annual holiday production of "Snow Queen." The productions are classical modern, with riveting story lines expressed by beautiful and athletic movement.
