Spirits on Bourbon is in the heart of the French Quarter on the world-famous Bourbon Street! While it features a huge variety of specialty drinks, our fun and friendly staff will be happy to mix up anything you desire! In the kitchen, our menu boasts local favorites and has become well-known by the locals for our Gumbo! A stop at Spirits isn't complete without a shot on Edwards Barber Chair! Why a barber chair? Spirits was formerly owned by Edward DeBoire who was a barber and had a rather successful business here. In true Bourbon Street spirit, he was known for letting his customers enjoy beer (home-made) during their hair cuts! It became known locally as Barber Beer and is still sold today! You'll love the taste of this 'beer' which isn't beer at all! Unfortunately, the free flowing drinks and beautiful Creole ladies called to Edward in a most unnatural way! He met a rather tragic death at only 33 years old. It is said that his spirit still enjoys our French Quarter night life. In fact, what is now our stage was where his barber chair stood. It was clear when the stage was errected that Edward did not appreciate our having changed his space, and began causing havoc on our bands. To passify him, we had custom made dueling piano's built as this was his favorite instument and he considered himself quite the pianist (though we have never found any evidence that he actually played)! You are free to sit and enjoy the nightly music and spirits with Edward! We later added the Barber Chair as a fun way to pay homage to Edward in a way that we thought he would appreciate! Make sure you take a shot...but don't be surprised when you get home and look at your photo's and find strange shadows or orbs in the background! Naturally, at Spirits you will find our featured drink, the Resurrection, will haunt you for more...but careful, it has a kick! Spirits on Bourbon anticipates that it will be feautured on the Nation-wide television show "Bar Rescue" for Season Three! Follow our Facebook Page and stay updated on the many goings on at Spirits! Located at 520 Frenchmen Street this portion is best known for a three-block section which is home to some of the city’s most popular live-music venues, restaurants, bars, bookstores, coffee shops, and serene Washington Square Park. 30° 90° is housed in the newest structure to be built in the neighborhood. Designed to fit into the historical district the architecture is distinctive on the exterior while being tastefully spacious on the interior. The combination of richly textured brick walls with hand-hewn local Cypress wood beams and columns enhanced by polished concrete floor and bars creates a comfortable and visually interesting environment. Jackson Brewing Company, or Jackson Brewery, was a regional brewery operating in New Orleans, Louisiana from 1890 to 1974. One of two breweries selling "Jax Beer", along with Jacksonville, Florida's Jax Brewing Company, it was popularly known as the Jax Brewery. At its height, it was the largest brewery in the Southern United States. Its French Quarter building is now a historic landmark in New Orleans and houses restaurants, apartments, and entertainment venues.HistoryThe brewery was founded by Lawrence Fabacher in 1890 as Jackson Bohemian Brewery; its name was later changed to Jax Beer and finally Jackson Brewing Company, after Andrew Jackson and Jackson Square. It soon grew to be a prominent regional brewery, and wasthe only New Orleans brewery to survive Prohibition.In 1935, Jackson Brewing Company entered a legal dispute with Jacksonville Brewing Company over the "Jax Beer" trademark, used by both companies. This resulted in a compromise in which Jacksonville Brewing Company got exclusive rights to sell in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina, while Jackson Brewing got states to the west. Jackson Brewing expanded in the 1940s, as demand increased. In the 1950s, the company suffered competition from the growing national breweries. In 1954, it bought exclusive rights to the Jax trademark from the Jacksonville company, which ended brewing operations. This move made Jackson Brewing the 10th largest brewery in the U.S., and the largest in the South. However, Jackson Brewing entered financial straits and was acquired by Pearl Brewing Company in 1974. Pearl continued producing Jax Beer until 1984, when it was acquired by Pabst Brewing Company and took on Pabst branding.
