April 16, 2015 Noon-4 pm Salt Lake Community College Student Center Taylorsville-Redwood Campus Sometimes it feels as if we live in a culture of desolation, one fractured by disengagement due to despair about the state of our lives, our nation, and our world. This state of fear and even hopelessness seems logical when we think about what we face, and have faced, collectively: continual war in the aftermath of 9/11, under-employment, natural disasters, random violence, racial violence and police shootings, school shootings, teen bullying and suicides, domestic violence, and on and on…. All these problems challenge our sense of safety and create fear. As a result, we are all too often angry and hostile with each other and don't always come together to heal. What can we do? How can writing for change create relationships among us that lead from despair to hope? How can telling our stories through writing, art, photography, song, video, or performance art make a positive difference in our lives and the lives of others? Explore these questions by being part of the Student Conference on Writing for Social Justice 2015. We seek proposals for stories of struggle with challenging social and political issues. These stories can be told in lots of different ways – in memoirs and essays, research papers, short video documentaries, artwork, or performance art . Presentations should explore how stories can be used to promote change and engage us actively in our communities.

In the year 2001 we decided to form our very own parent group not affiliated with any national parent/teacher association. We act in the best interest of the students who attend Vista Elementary. All funds raised by Vista's "VIP's" stay at Vista.
