The HackensackUMC Foundation is the catalyst where philanthropy meets innovation, engaging generous people in opportunities to advance the medical center's programs and initiatives. As the philanthropic arm of the medical center since 1980, the HackensackUMC Foundation was established as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization to benefit Hackensack University Medical Center. In the past three decades, the Foundation has changed the face of the campus with each successive capital campaign. We are grateful for all the support that we received to make this possible.
Our children are our future, and for this reason, the Environmental Health Center works to ensure children have the healthiest life possible. Through dedicated commitment, expert research, education and practical solutions, we are convinced it can be achieved. We are certain one day we will be able to ultimately eradicate the major environmental risks our children are exposed to. The Deirdre Imus Environmental Health Center® at Hackensack University Medical Center represents one of the first hospital-based programs whose specific mission is to identify, control and ultimately prevent toxic exposures in the environment that threaten our children's health. The Environmental Health Center is part of HackensackUMC, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation where the award-winning Greening The Cleaning® program originated. Everyone has a role to play in prevention. Toxins exist in homes, schools and workplaces, so each of us has an obligation to help identify and eliminate them. Disease prevention is the new standard in healthcare, so we each must take responsibility to maintain our health through exercise and proper food choices. (Learn more about Diet and Prevention.) Children’s health must not be determined by the same standards as adults Children are more adversely affected by exposure to environmental toxins because, pound for pound of body weight, they breathe and eat more than adults. Their bodies are still developing and their cells multiply more rapidly. Children deserve public health standards that take their size and metabolism into account. The key to protecting our children is prevention. It is no secret that environmental factors play a role in a number of childhood diseases and cancers. The President's Panel report, "Reducing Environmental Cancer Risk" offers a comprehensive approach to reducing cancer and other health risks associated with environmental contaminants in our air, water, food, soil, excess radiation, and other harmful exposures. When we are aware of these toxins, we can eliminate and avoid them -- and help our children do the same. That is why we want to eliminate threats to our environmental health wherever they exist, including toxic cleaning chemicals and pesticides in schools, at work and around the home. We must educate the public, our school boards, our employers and our legislators -- and work to improve our future today. We urge you to join our efforts. Together we can make a difference. Simple Steps You Can Take to Reduce Environmental Exposures to Toxins • Replace traditional cleaning chemicals with Greening The Cleaning® products, based on non-toxic ingredients. • Replace traditional lawn and garden pesticides with safer alternatives. • Avoid pesticide residues on food by buying organic produce. • Buy cosmetics and toiletries based on non-toxic ingredients. • Maintain a healthy, whole-food, organic diet whenever possible. • Avoid fish contaminated with mercury and PCB's and dioxins.
