National Jewish Health has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report as #1 or #2 every year that the Pulmonology category has been included in the rankings (since 1997). Our approach puts the patient first and combines compassionate patient care, collaborative research, education and outreach to improve lives while advancing the frontiers of medicine. Our experts in respiratory, cardiology, lung cancer, immune and related diseases break new ground each and every day in their search for improved prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Our history is rich in caring, leadership and innovation. In 1899 National Jewish Health was the first institution in the nation with the primary goal of providing free care to indigent tuberculosis patients and restoring their health. Patients came looking for and finding hope, help and healing. Patients continue to come to National Jewish Health because we make the difference — we find the answers and we help improve quality of life. Our mission then and now is to heal, discover and educate as a preeminent health care institution. Patient care, education, research and innovation have been our cornerstones and have led to our inclusion on lists of top hospitals and awards for top physicians and researchers as well as scientific advancements and discoveries.

The Zoology Department houses significant research collections, conducts evolutionary based research, and is involved in scientific outreach. Dry and fluid collections contain ~940,000 specimens/specimen lots in five major collections: Arachnology (~44,000 vials); Marine Invertebrates (~17,500 lots); Entomology (780,000+ specimens); Mammalogy (~15,000 specimens); and Ornithology (54,000+ specimens, including eggs and nests). Although the primary focus is the Rocky Mountains and Great Plains, collections span seven continents and over 150 years of coverage. Recent growth in these collections comes from DMNS research projects focused on small mammals, arachnids, and beetles; donations of personal collections in all disciplines; general collecting of mammals, arachnids, and insects; salvage of mammals and birds; and transfers from state and federal agencies in all disciplines. Specimens records are also published, via Arctos, to data portals such as SCAN, ORNIS, MANiS, VertNet, GBIF, GenBank, and BISON, among others. The Director of the P₃F is Dr. Jeff Swigris from National Jewish Health in Denver, Colorado. Other P₃F team members include patients with PF, nurses with expertise in caring for patients with PF, patient advocacy group representatives and PF support group leaders. P₃F was borne out of a desire to unite people who share the goals of expanding PF research opportunities to patients across the U.S.–not just those who live near subspecialty clinics–and to improving the lives of patients with this terrible disease. The backbone of P₃F is a confidential registry of patients with PF (and/or their caretakers or family members) who may wish to participate in research projects as they become available. More than that, though, P₃F creates a transparent, trustworthy environment in which members can share ideas, keep up with the progress and results of P₃F-related research, play a role in disseminating new information about PF and get answers from people with expertise in PF. Organizations like the American Thoracic Society and the American College of Chest Physicians–two of the largest medical associations in the U.S. dedicated to public education and scientific discovery in respiratory diseases–as well as various U.S. research funding organizations have finally recognized the importance of including “the patient’s perspective” in their programs. This means finding out from patients exactly which research questions to ask and drawing on patient input to design the studies that will yield the answers. You, the patient (and caregiver), are the experts here: you know better than anyone else what it’s like to live with pulmonary fibrosis. Join now and, whether you live next door to, or hundreds of miles away from, a medical center with expertise in PF, you can partner with other P₃F members to forge a new path to discovery for this disease.
VOCI's focused approach is youth mainstreaming for the inclusion of youth in development at the community and city level.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.) About TED TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a conference in California 26 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with many initiatives. At a TED conference, the world's leading thinkers and doers are asked to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes or less. TED speakers have included Roger Ebert, Sheryl Sandberg, Bill Gates, Elizabeth Gilbert, Benoit Mandelbrot, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Brian Greene, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Three major TED events are held each year: The TED Conference takes place every spring in Vancouver, Canada, simultaneous with TEDActive, in Whistler, BC; and the TEDGlobal Conference takes place each summer in Edinburgh, Scotland. On TED.com, talks from TED conferences are shared with the world for free as TED Talks videos. A new TED Talk is posted every weekday. Through the Open Translation Project, TED Talks are subtitled by volunteers worldwide into more than 90 languages. Through our distribution networks, TED Talks are shared on TV, radio, Netflix and many websites. The TEDx initiative grants free licenses to people around the world to organize TED-style events in their communities with TED Talks and live speakers. More than 5,000 TEDx events have been held, and selected talks from these events are also turned into TED Talks videos. The annual TED Prize grants $1 million to an exceptional individual with a wish to change the world. The TED Fellows program helps world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities. TED-Ed creates short video lessons by pairing master teachers with animators, for use in classroom instruction or independent learning.
