We’re in New Orleans, after all—and here, we’ll throw a party for any reason.
Built by architect Sam Stone in 1906, this Beaux Arts style venue is believed to be the oldest surviving theatre in New Orleans. Originally opening as the Schubert, the theatre has operated under many names, including the Lafayette, the Star and the Poché. It was renamed the Civic in 1951 and turned into the Civic Disco during the 1970s. While the adjacent arcade structures were converted into loft apartments in the 2000s, the theatre sat idle for years. Today, when you come in through the new alley entrance off O’Keefe Street, you’ll find a magnificent venue that now stands as a link between the rich past and dynamic future of New Orleans. The Contemporary Arts Center (CAC) was formed in the fall of 1976 by a passionate group of visual artists when the movement to tear down the walls between visual and performing arts was active nationwide. The CAC began as an artist-run, artist-driven community organization in the nearly empty arts district of New Orleans. As the burgeoning arts district grew, so did the CAC, evolving to meet the increasing needs of a diverse audience and artist communities. Renovated in 1990, and donated to the CAC in 1999, the CAC’s building mixes the timelessness of New Orleans’ historic architecture with contemporary materials and usable open spaces. Throughout the CAC’s 35 years, the center has remained active in the visual and performing arts and arts education communities, continuing to represent an era of creative freedom and multi-disciplinary expression. Today, the CAC is one out of a handful of nationwide arts organizations who have remained solvent and successful while serving a truly multi-disciplinary mission. Currently dedicating two floors, about 10,000 square feet of gallery space, on the 4-story building to rotating exhibitions throughout the year, the CAC is home to artists’ bold experiments in painting, theater, photography, performance art, dance, music, video, education, and sculpture. Since 2006, the CAC has awarded $350,000 in grants to individual New Orleans’ artists who were affected by Hurricane Katrina through the CAC Theatre Arts Fund and the SweetArts Katrina Fund. Offering creative outlets and opportunities, the CAC’s education department successfully engages over 10,000 children and adults annually, including those with special needs. The CAC’s education and outreach projects offer unique arts education settings where students, most for the first time, work together with professional artists, generating a greater impact through more personal, interactive experiences. The CAC’s significance and role in the cultural community of New Orleans has and always will be cemented in its broad community-based programs and initiatives.

In its heyday, the Carver Theater was a magnificent building serving a cultural function of bringing people together. Named after one of the 20th century's greatest scientists, George Washington Carver, whose influence is still being felt today. Rising from slavery to become one of the world's most respected and honored men, he devoted his life to understanding nature and the many uses for the simplest of plant life. He is best known for developing crop-rotation methods for conserving nutrients in soil and discovering hundreds of new uses for crops such as the peanut. Carver’s scientific discoveries included more than three hundred different products derived from the peanut, some 100 from sweet potatoes, about 75 from pecans, and many more including crop rotation. His personal mission was to empower the underserved with scientific methodology to help them prosper. The Carver Theater retired as a movie theater in 1980 and shortly thereafter became a housing office operation and a medical clinic. Having sustained irreparable damage from six feet of water during hurricane Katrina, the medical clinic was permanently closed. Fortunately, building modification for the clinic was wood frame and drywall, confined to the interior and was able to be removed completely. Exterior architectural details have been preserved, including the display windows which once held flashy movie posters with brilliant images of the stars of that time.
