DRC was established at Ohio State University by Professors E.L. Quarantelli, Russell Dynes, and Eugene Haas, and moved to its current location at the University of Delaware, in 1985. The Center was the first in the world devoted to the social scientific study of disasters. Social scientific research is still a core concern at DRC despite the fact that we are now a multi-disciplinary center engaged in a wide array of research activities. Researchers at DRC have conducted over 600 field studies since the Center’s inception, traveling to communities throughout the United States and to a number of foreign countries conducting field interviews and extended research projects on community, group, organizational, and community preparation for, response to, and recovery from disasters and other community-wide crises. We have carried out systematic studies on a broad range of disaster types, including but not limited to hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, hazardous chemical incidents, plane crashes, and civil disturbances. All DRC research is intended to yield both basic scientific knowledge on disasters and information that can be applied to develop more effective plans and policies to reduce disaster impacts.
The purpose of our initiative is to bring the different faiths from a dividing issue of Israel to a unifying agenda. Students of the University of Delaware will gain a better perspective on the diversity in Israel and will become active advocates in their own communities inside and outside the University. The initiative will bring in students from many backgrounds, allowing them to establish a more personal connection with one another despite their different faiths and come together in support of Israel. This initiative is innovative to our campus because in years past regarding Israel there has been minimal connection between the different University Religious Life Organizations. In general, Israel is not discussed outside the Jewish community in the University. Given the opportunity to use the initiative could help bring all faith-based organizations together in support of Israel at the University of Delaware. The initiative will create advocates from different faith groups in support of Israel. The students will learn to investigate and discuss matters of Israel that will raise awareness to the greater student body of the University of Delaware. At the end of the initiative, each student will be able to articulate their own opinion of Israel and will become active in advocates for Israel. Funding is received from The Israel on Campus Coalition and supported by the Avi Chai Foundation.
