The Montana Department of Livestock (MDOL) has been serving the livestock industry since territorial days. In a state with a billion dollar a year livestock industry and nearly three times as many cattle as people, that’s a pretty big deal. Our wide-ranging responsibilities include managing animal disease; issuing brands and enforcing brand laws; inspecting livestock; investigating and preventing livestock theft; and inspecting and licensing meat processors and egg, milk and dairy producers.Created in 1885, MDOL has a statewide presence with the State Veterinarian’s office and its network of district investigators, market personnel and 500-plus volunteer inspectors with which it carries out its mission. An executive branch agency, MDOL is the only state agency directed by a citizens’ board, the seven-member Board of Livestock, which consists of four members representing the cattle industry and one each from the dairy, swine and sheep/wool industries. The department is primarily funded through users fees, such as per capita and brand inspection fees, which account for approximately three-quarters of its annual budget.
MSL meets the information needs of Montana government agency management and staff, ensures all Montana citizens have access to information created by their government, supports the role of all Montana libraries in delivering quality library content and services to their patrons, works to strengthen local community public libraries, ensures that Montanans who are visually or physically handicapped are provided access to library resources, and measures its successes by its patrons’ and partners’ successes.

In a state where cattle outnumber people, agriculture is our business. In fact, it’s Montana’s number one industry and growing. With 28,008 farms and ranches across Montana, the industry generated over $4.2 billion for all agriculture services and products rendered in 2012. Our products, from wheat and barley to beef, are some of the highest quality and highly desired throughout the United States and world. Montana’s agricultural industry is constantly evolving to meet the needs of national and international consumers, and finding ways to add value to their products. Food manufacturing is one of the fastest growing sectors in Montana, with employment growth set to outpace all other manufacturing industries this year. Montana is a leading producer of certified organic wheat, dry peas, lentils and flax, and is home to a multimillion dollar honey and pollinating industry. Sweet cherries, sugar beets, seed potatoes, and hay are among some of the other crops grown in the state. Montana ingenuity is adding value to what we grow by producing bread, cereal, candies, jams, snacks, pasta, wine, and other quality specialty products consumed throughout the world.
The Montana Motor Vehicle Division, with a lean staff of only 159 dedicated people, helps just over a million people across the Big Sky State with obtaining new and renewal standard driver licenses, maintaining historical records on 1.7 million drivers, and processing over 75,000 convictions of Montana drivers and more than 24,000 out-of-state drivers. MVD also issues nearly 30,000 handi-capped placards, processes over 50,000 license suspensions and reinstatements, and with our county partners, produces more than 2.7 million titles and registrations for 2.1 million registered vehicles.
The Governor’s Office of Community Service and the Governor-appointed Montana Commission on Community Service were created in 1993 to promote and expand national service and volunteer opportunities in Montana.
