Sardi's

(212) 221-8440

Sardi's is a Continental restaurant located at 234 West 44th Street (between Broadway and Eighth Avenue) in the Theater District in Manhattan, in New York City. Known for the hundreds of caricatures of show-business celebrities that adorn its walls, Sardi's opened at its current location on March 5, 1927.Creation and early yearsMelchiorre Pio Vincenzo "Vincent" Sardi, Sr. (born in S. Marzano Oliveto, Italy on December 23, 1885 – died November 19, 1969) and his wife Eugenia ("Jenny") Pallera (born in Castell'Alfero, Italy on July 14, 1889) opened their first eatery, The Little Restaurant, in the basement of 246 West 44th Street in 1921. When that building was slated for demolition in 1926 (to build the St. James Theatre), they accepted an offer from the theater magnates, the Shubert brothers, to relocate to a new building the brothers were erecting down the block. The new restaurant, Sardi's, opened March 5, 1927.When business slowed after the move, Vincent Sardi sought a gimmick to attract customers. Recalling the movie star caricatures that decorated the walls of Joe Zelli’s, a Parisian restaurant and jazz club, Sardi decided to recreate that effect in his establishment. He hired a Russian refugee named Alex Gard (1898–1948) (born Alexis Kremkoff in Kazan, Russia) to draw Broadway celebrities. Sardi and Gard drew up a contract that stated Gard would make the caricatures in exchange for one meal per day at the restaurant. The first official caricature by Gard was of Ted Healy, the vaudevillian of Three Stooges fame. When Sardi’s son, Vincent Sardi, Jr. (1915–2007), took over restaurant operations in 1947, he offered to change the terms of Gard's agreement. Gard refused and continued to draw the caricatures in exchange for meals until his death.

Longtime restaurateur, lifetime New Yorker and Irish-American, Bruce Caulfield always wanted to create a place that had the homey feel of a Irish pub, the quality of a fine dining establishment, and a great selection food and drinks at reasonable prices. Along with his father John and partners Patrick and Michael O’Brien, he made this a reality by building Tracks. Restaurants and bars have always been a part of Bruce’s life and it’s how he met his partners, Patrick and Michael. Bruce’s grandfather owned a bar on 1st Avenue and 53rd Street in the 1930’s (where Parnell’s currently is), and both Pat and Mike worked there as porters in the 1980’s while in high school. Bruce got to know them through the newsstand he owned on 2nd Avenue and 53rd Street, and it was there where they vowed to open a bar together some day. And 20 years later, the dream became a reality when they created Tracks. One look around Tracks and you would notice how much time and effort was taking into creating the perfect place for enjoying a meal or hanging out for a drink after work. Tracks was a labor of love that required all Bruce's and the O’Briens' creativity and commitment. The care and attention to detail are showcased in the railroad theme found throughout Tracks, featuring old prints and murals related to the history of the LIRR - for train spotters a particular rare model of the 1964 World’s Fair subway is on display. The owners of Tracks owe their deepest appreciation to the numerous bar owners and bartenders who helped as advisors throughout the years. Eamonn Doran, Steve McFadden and Danny Ryan were a tremendous influence in the early years, and current supporters Danny McDonald, Des O’Brien, and all their friends at Tir na Nog gave essential assistance to the creation of Tracks.

1501 Broadway, also known as the Paramount Building, is a 33-story, 391ft office building located between West 43rd and 44th Streets in the Times Square neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. It once housed the Paramount Theatre. The structure is currently the 360th tallest building in New York City. It was designated a New York City Landmark in 1988.HistoryParamount Pictures, one of the major American motion picture companies in the 1920s, built its headquarters at the 1501 Broadway location along with a cinematic theatre. Construction lasted a year between 1926-1927 costing $13.5 million. At the time of its completion, it was the tallest building in Times Square, and once sported an observation deck.Paramount president Adolph Zukor had acquired a controlling interest in the Chicago-based Balaban and Katz theatre chain, and with it the services of Sam Katz, who became the head of Paramount's theatre division. Balaban and Katz had a long working relationship with the Chicago architectural firm Rapp and Rapp (C.W Rapp and George L. Rapp), which had designed numerous theaters for his company in the Midwest. They later hired the firm to design their new Manhattan flagship theater and office tower. The Rapp brothers created a thirty-three story office tower which was influenced by the Art Deco style, and a theatre in the palatial Neo-Renaissance style behind it.
