From fighting the Transatlantic slave trade to daring rescues on the Chesapeake; the historic ships provided humanitarian aid and defended the freedoms we hold dear. Zion is the second oldest congregation in Baltimore, and the mother church of Lutheranism in the Baltimore metro region. The church building dates back to 1807, and the tower and parish hall ("Adlersaal") to 1912.

The Greater Baltimore Urban League movement was founded in 1924. Ever since then, through direct service delivery, advocacy, referrals, community capacity building, information dissemination and technical assistance, the League has been helping disadvantaged Marylanders gain access to equal opportunity in employment, education, health care, housing and the civic arena.

Maryland Humanities formed in 1973 at the invitation of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Initially known as the Maryland Committee for the Humanities and Public Policy, Maryland Humanities incorporated in 1977 and acted almost exclusively as a grant-making organization for 20 years. Beginning in the early 1990s, Maryland Humanities began to conduct its own public humanities programs, while still awarding grants to support the programming efforts of Maryland institutions and organizations. In 2002, cuts in state funding prompted Maryland Humanities to reach out to the community for foundation, corporation, and individual support. A successful capital campaign allowed Maryland Humanities to relocate its headquarters to Mount Vernon Cultural District in 2005, where the high-profile location provides enhanced visibility for our programming in the vibrant cultural center of Baltimore. In 2006, Maryland Humanities revised its mission statement to reflect its commitment to working with communities, groups, and audiences throughout the state to stimulate and promote informed dialogue and civic engagement on issues critical to Marylanders. Programs such as Practicing Democracy and initiatives like the”Remembrance & Reconciliation: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.” and “Sitting Down to Take a Stand” Rosa Parks programs generated discussion on race in Maryland while commemorating Civil Rights Movement. In 2012 Maryland Humanities embarked on a strategic planning process that resulted in a new mission, reaffirming the organization’s commitment to lifelong learning in the humanities and its power to enrich our lives and communities.

The Friends fulfill their mission by: 1. Maintaining a volunteer Friends organization to assist the Library in identifying its needs 2. Publicizing the services of the Library 3. Encouraging Marylanders to seek out the Library's services 4. Coordinating individuals, civic associations, businesses, organizations, institutions and educations groups in providing suggestions and a focus for Library services. 5. Providing grant and materials support beyond the state and federal funding for program success.

History Day is an exciting, history-based learning experience for students in grades 6 through 12. In History Day, students learn about issues, ideas, people, and events in history and apply what they have learned through creative and original productions. Students begin working on their research projects at the start of the school year. District contests take place in February and March, culminating at the statewide Maryland History Day competition in May and finally, National History Day in June.

DECA enhances the co-curricular education of members through a comprehensive learning program that integrates into classroom instruction, applies learning, connects to business and promotes competition. DECA’s activities assist in the development of academically prepared, community oriented, professionally responsible, experienced leaders. DECA Inc. is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit student organization with more than 200,000 members in all 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Canada, China, Germany, Guam, Hong Kong, Korea, Mexico and Puerto Rico. The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA), organized in 1946, is made up of public high schools from each of the 24 school systems. The purpose of the MPSSAA is to promote and direct public high school interscholastic activities in order to assure that those activities contribute toward the entire educational program of the state of Maryland. The MPSSAA currently includes 197 public high schools, with almost 114,000 student-athletes participating in 24 sports. The MPSSAA derives its authority from the Maryland State Department of Education and the 24 local school systems. The goal of the Association is to promote, direct, and regulate interscholastic athletics of the public high schools, as well as ensure a safe and educationally balanced program. The MPSSAA is governed by a Board of Control and Executive Council that is represented by school superintendents, athletic coordinators, principals, athletic directors, and coaches. In addition, there are many standing and tournament committees that administer the 24 State tournaments as well as many other student-related programs.

Inspiring People and Community was founded by Sharlena Barrow-Manley and Andrea Finch who both are mothers of two handsome and exceptional boys. Sharlena and Andrea both have a son with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) which is how they met. The ladies met at an early intervention co-op in Owings Mills, MD where their sons were receiving services. They quickly became best friends that actively support each other on their journey with their sons with autism. The unwavering challenges the two moms face with trying to receive the best services to include recreational activities for each of their boys has been unquestionably challenging. Like many parents with a child with special needs, significant sacrifices are present. The moms found it to be a financial strain in accessing high quality services and supports. Since their sons who have autism have limited awareness of safety and are attracted to water, Sharlena and Andrea found themselves even struggling to afford private swimming lessons. Due to safety and sensory concerns many children on the spectrum require 1:1 lessons. More and more Andrea and Sharlena encountered families who also could not afford the high cost of services such as applied behavior analysis, private swimming lessons, therapeutic horseback riding and so much more. When Andrea and Sharlena came across parents of children with autism in the inner city of Baltimore, MD they soon realized the substantial disparity amongst low-income as well as the working middle class. The two moms soon found themselves volunteering their time to help low-income individuals and families with autism spectrum disorders to the point that they decided to follow their hearts of starting a non-profit. Too often on their journey Sharlena and Andrea heard the words “what if” stated for persons with special needs. For example, “what if” he had access to adequate early intervention services would his life be different? Or “what if” she was able to afford therapeutic activities for her daughter would she have less problem behavior? Following their hearts have now led Sharlena and Andrea to living their dream of helping individuals with special needs.

This conference was last held in 2014 (also, in Baltimore). Both the 2012 and 2014 Reinventing Quality conferences attracted over 700 professionals in the disabilities field, people with disabilities, family members, advocates, and state and federal officials. The goal of the Reinventing Quality Conference is to provide information, new ideas and active discussion about best practice models of individualized, person centered supports and related quality management activities for people with disabilities and their families.

We serve in disaster relief and human development areas within the US as well as in several other countries around the world. Our main initiatives include education (Our Kids, Our Future program); health services (Gift of Sight medical missions); community development (Water for Life program); and disaster relief.

The goal of this project is to teach youth they can be agents of social change through research and activism. Throughout the school year, student leaders (two from each public high school in the city) will design and implement a series of focus groups with their peers to build a critical ethnography of the space. After data is collected and analyzed, students will hold a press conference to formally release their suggestions for improving the Harbor. Finally, they will create and execute a plan for implementation.
