Eastern Maine Medical Center is a hospital located in Bangor, Maine that serves communities throughout central, eastern, and northern Maine. EMMC is the second largest hospital in the state with 411 inpatient beds, serves more than 40% of the population of the state, and is the sixth largest employer in the state. EMMC is the only provider of trauma care in its class, and the only advanced critical care provider, in eastern and northern Maine.EMMC is host of Lifeflight of Maine. Eastern Maine Medical Center is also a major training affiliate of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. According to Leapfrog Group, EMMC is one of 16 hospitals that were "A"-rated for safety in Maine; 80% of the state's hospitals received "A"-grades, surpassed only by Massachusetts with 83%.HistoryIn March 1891, a public meeting in Bangor resulting in a petition being circulated calling for the "establishment, operation, and maintenance of a General Hospital for the charitable and benevolent purposes of aiding, treating and relieving the sick, injured and disabled..." The petition was signed by 70 citizens. A year later, five physicians: Doctors William Mason, Walter Hunt, Everett Nealey, William Baxter and William Simmons published a notice in a local newspaper announcing that a Bangor General Hospital would open its doors on June 7, 1892; this caused some controversy over whether such a notice constituted "advertising" and thus violated the Medical Code of Ethics. A paper was read on the issue at the annual AMA meeting in Milwaukee, and a Dr. D. A. Robinson argued for the hospital.

A group of parents and friends of children with intellectual disabilities started Sunrise Opportunities in 1957. At that time, children who could not keep up with their classmates were not allowed to remain in school. People who were concerned about giving them the opportunity to learn to their maximum potential formed this organization in order to deliver specialized services tailored to their specific ability levels. The first program served 10 children, and was staffed by a variety of volunteers. Over the years, private donations, and state and federal funding supplemented the money raised through baked bean suppers. Additional programs and services were added to meet a wider array of needs. Today more than 100 children and adults receive services, which are delivered to people in their homes, or at locations throughout Washington and Eastern Hancock County. The organization continues its commitment of more than 50 years to provide quality services to help people succeed in their local communities.

Destination Imagination, Inc. is an extraordinary non-profit organization that provides educational programs for students to learn and experience creativity, teamwork and problem solving. Every year, we reach 100,000 students across the U.S. and in more than 30 countries. Destination Imagination, our core program, is an educational program in which student teams solve open-ended Challenges and present their solutions at Tournaments. Teams are tested to think on their feet, work together and devise original solutions that satisfy the requirements of the Challenges. Participants gain more than just basic knowledge and skills—they learn to unleash their imaginations and take unique approaches to problem solving. Destination Imagination™ is the world’s largest non-profit, volunteer-driven organization devoted to helping kids gain practical life skills through interesting, entertaining and mind-boggling challenges. Teams of up to seven students organize, choose their challenge and work for months honing their solution. Volunteer team managers (parents, teachers or community volunteers) facilitate the group, but cannot give technical or other assistance. Teams present their solutions at regional and/or state tournaments, which narrow the field to about 15 teams from each state or international affiliate. These teams compete in the ultimate creativity showdown, Global Finals, each May. The Destination Imagination™ competition has two components: Instant Challenges teach students to respond quickly to the unplanned event by requiring them to solve a fun, surprise challenge on the spot. Teams must work together to quickly assess the situation and generate an appropriate and creative response within just a few minutes. Team Challenges require teams to utilize each member’s skills in such diverse areas as art, writing, technology, performance, engineering, and music to create a unique solution that can take from several weeks to several months to develop. Students learn to work together as they practice project management skills by meeting deadlines imposed by tournament dates and completing their solution within a specified budget. Teams present their solutions before a live audience and panel of appraisers. Scoring is based on criteria specified in the challenge, which usually includes analysis of the team’s innovation, risk-taking and teamwork. Destination Imagination™ is inclusive and inexpensive. Membership categories are designed to allow for the greatest number of participants possible. Program costs are minimal and local memberships are encouraged to offer the program to all interested students. In fact, student participation is often limited only by the number of adults willing to serve as team managers. Considering the countless benefits Destination Imagination™ offers, it is certainly one of the best values in education today. Maine Career Connect is an innovative nonprofit program currently serving employers in Penobscot and Hancock counties, with the goal of becoming a statewide organization under the support of the Maine State Chamber of Commerce. Maine Career Connect partners with employers in the area to offer support to their newly recruited, and relocating professional employees. This support consists of providing the employer with recruitment support by promoting our area and supporting the professional and their families in making the very important decision to move to Maine. Once the professional and their family decide to relocate to Maine, we then provide services to them in the realm of dual career support and family assimilation. The dual career support services assist in connecting the partner with leadership in their field of expertise and accelerates their job search process. Assimilating the family consists of connecting the family to all of the resources they need upon their relocation and continuously throughout their first year in Maine. This program is made possible by a National Science Foundation grant awarded to the University of Maine ADVANCE Rising Tide Center, as well as support from various employers across the state.
