My name is Pat Hagan and as one of the founding owners, I would like to share with you the Bluegrass Brewing Company story. The road to BBC, as we know it today, began after my graduation from high school in southern Indiana when I set off hitchhiking to California to live for a short time in the Santa Cruz, San Jose area. Motivated by a restless need for adventure, I hitchhiked back and forth across the country several times, always returning to California or Kentuckiana. While on the West Coast, I was introduced to craft brewed beers (San Jose is about an hour south of Chico, home to Sierra Nevada Brewing Company) and developed a love and passion for the “hoppy” beers of California. I eventually came home to settle in the Kentuckiana area, but returned to California many times to visit friends and drink the great beers brewed there. Eager to learn the brewing process, I attended an intensive brewing course at Sieble Institute in Chicago and was soon starting to think beyond home brewing. Recognizing the time was right to open a brewpub in Louisville, I convinced my father, Monte Hagan, to partner with me and in November of 1993 we opened the original Bluegrass Brewing Company, located in St. Matthews. BBC St. Matthews has become a landmark neighborhood establishment with over 900 members in the Wort Hog Club. Known as a great place to eat and enjoy exceptional hand-crafted beer, BBC St. Matthews is also a popular venue for live music. In 2002 we bought the Pipkin Brewing Company and ventured into outside retail keg and bottle sales. After realizing this was a whole new and different business, we licensed the BBC brand to a group of investors so we could focus our attention on the brewpub side of the business. The BBC bottling operation has grown exponentially every year and has helped to establish the BBC name in Kentucky, Indiana , Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia. The bottling plant and tap room are located at Clay and Main St. in downtown Louisville. In 2006, we opened our second Bluegrass Brewing Company brewpub at Theatre Square on 4th Street downtown. Conveniently located for convention-goers and out-of-town visitors, BBC at Theatre Square boasts the best alfresco dining in the city with a park-like setting surrounded by flowers and trees. Also located in the Square is the wonderfully eccentric Derby Clock, designed by the famous Louisville sculptor, Barney Bright. BBC at 3rd and Main Street – our newest location – opened in 2010 and is situated directly across the street from the new KFC Yum Center Arena. We completely redesigned and renovated the interior first three floors of the circa 1880 building which is listed on the National Historic Register. The lower cellar level with the brewery, stone floors and high top tables and booths has a distinctly European pub atmosphere. The main floor dining area and bar recall the building’s historic past with original marble floors, high ceilings and large windows overlooking Main Street and the Arena. The spacious third floor is our BBC Four Roses Bourbon Barrel Loft – a private party venue available for meetings, parties, receptions, rehearsal dinners or special occasions. The comfortable sophistication of the Loft has the unique atmosphere of a New York “speakeasy”. Bluegrass Brewing Company has evolved over the years but I believe we have been successful because we have always remained true to our original mission: “To create bold, unique, hand-crafted beers, quality affordable food, and serve them both in a warm and comfortable, family friendly atmosphere.” We believe in using local products as much as possible and support our community by hosting many fundraising events . We are very proud of our beers which have won many local and national awards and are recognized across the country for the “hoppy” flavor that I came to know and love. We’ve come a long way since 1993 and there is no telling which way the future winds will blow the hop seeds of Bluegrass Brewing Company but one thing is for certain – BBC will remain true to our hometown, family-friendly identity and our mission to maintain our high BBC standards of quality and service. The decor produces an inviting, down-home feel, with stacked wood accents and earth tones. Quiet antique store grows into happening sandwich shop. Potbelly Sandwich Shop began in 1977 as a small antique store run by a nice young couple. Despite the fast-paced, never-a-dull-moment world of antique dealing, the couple decided to bolster their business by making sandwiches for their customers. What began as a lark, turned out to be a stroke of genius. Soon, people who couldn't care less about vintage glass doorknobs were stopping by to enjoy special sandwiches and homemade desserts in this unusual atmosphere. As the years passed, the lines grew. Booths were added, along with ovens for toasting sandwiches to perfection, vista-coolers, napkin dispensers, hand-dipped ice cream - even live music. The little antique shop had become a full-fledged, totally unique sandwich joint. Then in 1996, an entrepreneurial young man by the name of Bryant Keil bought the original store on Lincoln Avenue in Chicago, Illinois. Together with his team, Bryant obsessed over every detail of each new store, making sure that they maintained the same charm and heritage.
