The BP MS 150 is a two-day fundraising cycling ride organized by the National MS Society. This ride is the largest event of its kind in North America. The 2013 BP MS 150 set a new fundraising record by raising more than $18 million and bringing hope to many who are living with multiple sclerosis. The two-day ride is a 180-mile journey for MS that starts in Houston and ends in Austin. Breakpoints are positioned every 8-15 miles. The ride begins Saturday morning at three convenient starting points: Omni Westside Hotel in Houston, Rhodes Stadium in Katy and Waller Stadium in Waller. Riders follow scenic roads into Bellville for lunch. Day One ends at the Fayette County Fairgrounds overnight in La Grange. On Sunday morning Club 300 members lead the mass on one of two routes that lead to Bastrop Intermediate School for lunch from the fairgrounds. Take the Bechtel Challenge Route and enjoy the rolling terrain of Bastrop and Buescher State Parks or bypass the parks via the Pfizer Lunch Express Route. The final leg of Day Two takes riders into Austin for exciting Finish Line festivities at the capital.
The Sprint for Life 5K Run/Walk and Sprint for Sprouts Kids’ Run on the campus of MD Anderson Cancer Center is held annually to raise awareness for ovarian cancer and funds for much need research. Dr. Marnie Rose put a human face to brain cancer and offered strength and hope to those suffering from the disease she was also battling. Run for the Rose honors Marnie's spirit, courage and strength that benefits two causes that touched her life so personally — brain cancer and children. We continue Marnie’s legacy by funding pediatric initiatives at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital, brain cancer research at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, and the Dr. Marnie Rose Foundation Professorship in Pediatric Neurosurgery at McGovern Medical School (formerly UTHealth Medical School).
The Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center is an accredited donor center for the National Marrow Donor Program which operates the Be The Match® Registry. Be The Match helps patients with leukemia, lymphoma and other diseases who need a marrow or umbilical cord blood transplant. People can join the Be The Match Registry – the world’s largest listing of potential marrow donors and donated cord blood units – contribute financially and volunteer. Patients and their families can also turn to Be The Match for support and resources before, during and after transplant. The NMDP is a nonprofit organization that matches patients with donors, educates health care professionals and conducts research so more lives can be saved.

In addition, HBS regularly sponsors several other educational and fun events which offer year round activities for anyone who appreciates the art of bonsai, regardless of experience level or degree of involvement. If one is interested in bonsai, joining HBS opens a world of opportunities. HBS is a member of a federation of clubs in Texas called the Lone Star Bonsai Federation ("LSBF"). Working with other LSBF clubs, resources are generated and pooled to fund many of the exciting HBS sponsored events. Most important probably are the workshops and lecture demonstrations given by visiting Bonsai Masters from around the world. Next is HBS participation in or hosting of an annual state convention and show of Texas artists' trees. In addition, twice a year, in Houston, there is a show of Houston artists' trees to the general public, usually in the Spring and Fall.
