Some of these projects include: the construction of two signature fountains, a monumental street-scaping project executed by the City of Columbia, a village-wide beautification project and the creation of a master plan, design guidelines and a new zoning overlay. In keeping with beautification, each year the organization retains an outside contractor to keep Five Points a beautiful and clean landmark within the city. One of only five National Historic Landmarks within Columbia, the Robert Mills House exemplifies the skill of the first architect born and trained within the United States who designed some of the nation's most prominent buildings, including the Washington Monument. Today, the structure stands as a testament of its designer's architectural ability and the preservation efforts of generations of Columbians. In 1823, Englishman Ainsley Hall and his Lower Richland County wife Sarah, hired Robert Mills to plan this stylish Classical Revival townhouse, one of few private residences he ever designed. Ainsley Hall died before the house was finished leaving a contested estate due to an outdated will. Ultimately, Sarah sold the mansion to the Presbyterian Synod of South Carolina and Georgia, which established a seminary there in 1831. Several influential pastors of the Presbyterian Church taught at the seminary including George Howe, Sr., who was instrumental in the institution’s founding, Dr. Joseph R. Wilson, Woodrow Wilson's father, and Dr. James Woodrow, the future president's uncle, who held positions on the faculty. In 1927, the Columbia Theological Seminary moved to Decatur, Georgia, and the campus served the Westerveldt Academy and later the Columbia Bible College, until 1960. A major grassroots movement led to the founding of Historic Columbia Foundation, which saved the house from demolition in the early 1960s. After extensive restoration, the property opened in 1967 as an historic house museum.

Imagine Cocky prancing around a wedding reception or a dramatic Tarleton Blackwell diptych painting (12 feet by 9 feet) or a mile of molding ready to be made into frames for art at the new Adesso Building. That’s what one might find at City Art between Gervais and Lady on Lincoln Street in the Congaree Vista. Partners Wendyth Wells, Heather Noe and Randy Hanna have 75 combined years of experience as artists, entrepreneurs, framers, gallery consultants and art supply dealers. City Art is their home and a place where artists gather. In addition to a full-service framing department and the largest fine arts supply store in the state, the City Art building houses an award winning art gallery and rental space for wedding receptions, parties, and small trade shows. Gallery Director Wendyth Wells supervises three separate gallery spaces and consults on projects as small as a single painting for an individual home to large corporate accounts like the new Adesso building on Main and Blossom and the Vista Bank. The gallery areas provide a unique backdrop for all kinds of rental needs and include Hootie and the Blow Fish as guests. Yes, the framing department has worked on African tribal belts, buffalo hides, wedding dresses and even shot guns. And the most fun project? Framing designer Heather Noe says that’s an easy answer. “We designed a collage of memorabilia after soul singer James Brown was honored at Lincoln Center in Washington D.C.” Randy added, “We stretched and framed portraits of JFK and Bill Clinton to be used for the movie Nailed when it filmed here this spring. College students, professional artists and those who paint for therapy or fun feel like a ‘kid in a candy store’ as they roam the aisles and peruse the large inventory in the lower level art supply store. The newest component of the City Art family of services is Art Xpress – an on-line art supply service. Randy Hanna’s happiest day as the manager of this new service when he took an order for Charles Reid signature brushes from pop/jazz icon Tony Bennett.

The Big Apple

Columbia, SC 29201

Originally known as the House of Peace, today's Big Apple replaced an earlier house of worship destroyed by fire in 1915. After 21 years, the congregation outgrew its home and the building was sold in 1936. That same year the property became reincarnated as the Big Apple Night Club, where the dance craze that swept the nation during the summer of 1937 was born. Crafted by Columbia's African-American youth, the Big Apple dance eventually traveled to New York by way of white students from the University of South Carolina. The dance attracted the attention of famed dance instructor Arthur Murray and songwriter Tommy Dorsey who wrote "The Big Apple Swing." By 1938, however, the club had closed and the property was sold. Abandoned in 1979, the former club was moved three years later from its original location at 1138 Park to its current siting at the corner of Hampton and Park streets.

One of Columbia's oldest remaining historic houses, the Hampton-Preston Mansion was home to many people for 150 years. The city residence of Columbia's Hampton and Preston elite planter-class families, this historic site featured gardens nationally renowned for their size and variety of plantings. Ainsley Hall, a wealthy Columbia merchant, and his wife Sarah, lived here for five years after they had the house built in 1818. Several years after buying the property in 1823, its second owner, Wade Hampton I, updated the Federal style home to more reflect the Greek Revival style. Hampton's third wife, Mary Cantey, supervised the installation of elaborate gardens that came to surround the mansion during the 1830s through 1860s. Following Wade Hampton I's death in 1835, daughter Caroline and son-in-law John Preston further transformed the estate by doubling the house's size between 1848 and 1850. Established as a Union Army headquarters in February 1865, the property survived destruction thanks to the exploits of Sister Bapista Lynch, who implored Sherman to spare the home for use as a temporary convent. In financial ruin, the family sold the estate in 1873. Later, the estate accommodated several institutions including the College for Women (1890-1915), Chicora College (1915-1930), Westerveldt Academy (1931-1935), and Columbia Bible College [overflow housing] (1938-1946). In 1947, the gardens were bulldozed and the four-acre tract was subdivided for various commercial uses. Following a yearlong rehabilitation, the historic mansion opened in 1970 as the centerpiece of the Midlands Tricentennial Exposition Center.
