The UAB School of Dentistry is the dental school of the University of Alabama System. It is a public dental school located at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in Birmingham, Alabama, United States. The dental school was founded in 1948 and is the only dental school in Alabama.HistoryThe UAB School of Dentistry, a unit of the Medical Center of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, was created by an act of the state legislature in 1945, the same year that the School of Medicine moved to Birmingham from the university campus in Tuscaloosa and became a four-year school. The School of Dentistry admitted its first class of students in October 1948. Since that time it has gained a national reputation for excellence and innovation. In addition to its first professional degree (D.M.D.) program, the school offers accredited postdoctoral programs in twelve areas of study. The development of "four-handed dentistry" and the expanded utilization of trained auxiliary personnel were pioneered at this institution. From 2012 through 2015 the School was ranked first in research funding from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial research.New FacilitiesStudents at the UAB School of Dentistry pursue their professional education utilizing modern equipment in recently renovated facilities. The renovations include all new state-of-the-art lecture rooms, new patient receiving and business areas, dental chairs and delivery systems, a new lobby and front entrance and preclinical labortary. The clinical facilities of the School of Dentistry Building contain more than 125000sqft of clinical teaching space. Teaching of the basic biomedical sciences is accomplished in Volker Hall. This multipurpose complex houses five lecture halls ranging in size from 125 to 700 seats and utilizes innovative audiovisual equipment and teaching aids, as well as wet and dry laboratories.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham is a public university in Birmingham in the U.S. state of Alabama. Developed from an academic extension center established in 1936, the institution became an autonomous institution in 1969 and is today one of three institutions in the University of Alabama System. The University of Alabama at Birmingham Spinal Cord Injury Model System (UAB-SCIMS) is the only system of care that has been continually recognized as a Model System since the creation of the program via Congressional Act in 1970. Today, UAB-SCIMS is one of 14 national SCI Model Systems programs funded by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research.
The UAB Neurofibromatosis (NF) Program provides clinical care, research and education related to all forms of neurofibromatosis, including NF1, NF2, and schwannomatosis. The program is led by Bruce Korf, M.D., Ph. D., who has more than 30 of experience in caring for patients with all forms of NF as well as developing and managing investigational research studies focused on identifying the genetic mechanisms involved in these disorders. A cornerstone of our program is the UAB NF Clinic, which provides comprehensive care to both children and adults in a multidisciplinary setting that gives patients access to a range of specialists with expertise in the treatment and management of NF and its related complications. We also support the emotional well-being of patients and families by providing exceptional education and genetic counseling services designed to provide answers and guidance for those dealing with the lifelong implications of an NF diagnosis. The UAB Neurofibromatosis Program also maintains a robust, innovative research effort aimed at developing new treatment approaches for NF-related complications. In support of this effort, our team of internationally renowned and dedicated UAB genetic scientists is actively engaged in the development of new animal models, stem cell lines, and drug discovery efforts. In addition, UAB serves as the NF Clinical Trials Consortium, a collaborative group of 13 medical centers across the country dedicated to conducting clinical trials of the most promising drug therapies for all forms of neurofibromatosis.
