My name is Teresa Peterson. I am the Executive Director of Zora Neale Hurston Community Center. Hurston Community Center became an idea in early 2014. After much thought and consideration and after building the idea, Hurston became incorporated in September 2014. Hurston Tutoring Program was initiated on February 17, 2015, to help tutor and mentor children with the help of volunteers. We aim to give students the opportunity to excel in education, and to give the extra push they may need to achieve, maintain, and exceed the standards set by the state and/or public school district. The tutoring/mentoring sessions are currently held three times per week for one hour each day. The tutoring is free of charge to all students. I have reserved the Education Room in the HealthCore Clinic (formerly known as Center of Health and Wellness) to hold said sessions. The volunteers help the students with their homework and core course studies. When a student does not have homework, we have workbooks to provide activities similar to what the students are doing in the classroom or worksheets that will introduce them to new material. I have been actively recruiting high school students, college students, college graduates, sorority and fraternity members, and anyone interested in giving back to the community to help Hurston grow to its full potential. All volunteers that are in contact with children will have a criminal history check through the Kansas Bureau of Investigations website. The volunteers that are not in contact with children will fill out the Volunteer application. If at a later date, the volunteer shows interest in working with the children, they will still require the criminal history check prior to engaging with children. One of the future goals is to have a summer tutoring program that will meet three times per week for 1-2 hours each day. We will allow the students to touch on educational material so they will be less likely to lose the information they gained over summer break. This among many other ideas and programs are to come in the future of Zora Neale Hurston Community Center.

I acquired my Ph.D. at the University of Kansas, focusing on general Clinical Psychology with a sub specialty in child and family psychology. A Kansas native, I have served the children and families of Kansas in an agency setting for 6 years and in my own private practice since 1985. Although I have a great deal of training in working with children, especially children under six, I like workiing with people of all ages. I particularly like working with those who are recovering from trauma. I provide therapy and counseling services for preschoolers, children and teens, adults, couples, families, and seniors. I also provide some evaluation services. My office accepts insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, and I am willing to work with my clients on payment. My home office is a relaxed, private, and comfortable environment where you can feel supported as you work on new skills and life patterns that can take you to a brighter tomorrow.
