In 1906 a new Catholic parish was built in La Jolla and was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin under her title of “Mary, Star of the Sea.” Over the years, as the geographical lines of La Jolla grew, so did Mary, Star of the Sea’s congregation. By 1936, the pastor, Fr. Thomas McNamara, began to make plans for construction of the present church of Mary, Star of the Sea. The architect was the celebrated Carleton Monroe Winslow, F.A.I.A., who created the building in Contemporary Spanish Mission design. The roof is of red clay mission tile with the ceiling of heavy, exposed wood rafters. Above the main entrance is a large true fresco, entitled “Our Lady, Star of the Sea” painted by Alfred Ramos Martinez. The new church was dedicated by the Most Reverend Bishop Charles Francis Buddy on December 5, 1937. Ten years later, ground was broken for a parish school, and in September, 1947 Stella Maris Academy opened its doors for the first time. The parish buildings of Mary, Star of the Sea are an icon in the lovely village of La Jolla. Those entering the doors of the church are touched by the hush of its simple beauty.

She is a hairstylist that will really listen to you and your needs, and not just do what she thinks is best. “When I do hair, I think of it as a team effort. Sure I have some creative ideas, but it’s important to me to hear what my client thoughts are” she says. For over 12 years Sherri has been creating her own techniques when it comes to her hairstyling methods. Early on in her career she was lucky enough to assist and train under Jean-Philippe of La Jolla and Bumble and Bumble in New York City. A few years later she made her dreams come true by moving to Los Angeles and becoming the hairstylist to many of Hollywood’s elite and some of your favorite celebrities. After 5 years in Los Angeles Sherri decided that San Diego is where her heart would always be, so she relocated back to the beaches of La Jolla and is happy to be home, though she still frequents LA to tend to her high profile clientele. Sherri has worked at some of the top salons in Southern California, and has now partnered with another respected hairstylist and opened Lux La Jolla Hair Studio, located in the heart of La Jolla Village on Girard Avenue. Lux La Jolla is an intimate, comfortable, and luxurious hair studio that is specially customized to give her clients the best experience and have them leaving the salon feeling so beautiful and refreshed!
