History of the Black Student Union of Concord University The Concord University Black Student Union began in 1996, at what was then Concord College, as P.R.I.D.E.—People’s Right in Dreaming of Equality. The purposes of the organization are: a) to inform and education the Concord community about African-American Culture; b) to provide leadership for incoming undergraduates of minority groups; c) to provide counseling and guidance for minority students; d) to recruit minority administration, faculty, and staff in positions of substantial importance; e) to include more minority students as part of the political and social systems of the College/University; f) to provide career planning and assistance to those qualified minority students that excel in athletics, academics, humanities or some other related field, g) to strive for closer unity among students; and h) to advocate and serve in the public interest. Membership in the Black Student Union is open to all Concord University Students, regardless of race, or ethnicity, who can relate to these principles and who wish to take an active role in furthering these principles for the benefit of all races, colors, and creeds everywhere. Activities of the Black Student Union over the years have included those which have fostered fellowship and association among the general student body, social action, and social justice issues, worship, and service projects for the benefit of the community. The Environmental Geosciences program at Concord University offers a career-oriented, flexible science bachelor's degree that merges traditional geology with applied environmental science. We have one of only three geology degree programs offered in West Virginia and the only one at a primarily undergraduate institution in the state. Geoscientists find solutions to some of humanity's most challenging problems: finding and managing natural resources, reducing human loss and suffering from natural hazards and disasters, understanding environmental change on geologic and human time scales, and advising policy makers on scientific and environmental issues that affect society. Students in the program frequently work closely with the geoscience faculty to complete one or more semesters of undergraduate research. Our innovative research in structural geology, earthquake geology, volcanology, and paleoclimate is funded by a variety of grants that allow students to travel with us to remote field settings including Greenland, the Colorado Rockies, and the Pacific Northwest. This research is also supported by facilities including our electron microprobe laboratory, micro-X-ray fluorescence lab, sample preparation lab, field geophysical equipment (e.g., ground penetrating radar), and polarizing microscopes. Scientists with geoscience-related degrees are in high demand. In 2010, the average salary for geoscientists was $93,000, which was $27,000 more than the national average for other science occupations according to the American Geosciences Institute. By 2025, the US is projected to have a shortfall of more than 135,000 new geoscientists. The job outlook is very strong and more than 95% of our recent graduates have entered graduate school or found professional jobs soon after graduating, if not before.

Mountaineer Cadet Officer Leadership School, otherwise known as "MCOLS" is a rigorous one-week camp for all high school students enrolled in a JROTC program with a high school in any of the South Eastern states. Cadets from as far as Missouri and as close as next door have come to attend this camp. Cadets are put through a very rewarding program which tests their limits and pushes them farther than they thought they could have gone. On Sunday, a group of scared young kids come to the University, and by the end-of-program parade on Saturday, a group of responsible, fit, confident young adults marches out of the football stadium to tearfully say goodbye to their new friends.
