On November 19, 1941, Governor J. Melville Broughton announced the first major gift to The Woman’s College (now UNCG). This gift, in commemoration of the school’s fiftieth anniversary, was a contribution in the amount of $50,000 from Greensboro’s Cone Family (Mrs. Julius Cone, Mrs. Caesar Cone and her three sons, Herman, Benjamin and Caesar II). The funds were to be used, according to the Cones, toward construction of a Student Center, “the most pressing single need of the college.” The funds would also have to be matched. Funds were allocated for the project by the Council of State, and the Works Progress Administration promised help. Priorities on steel and World War II delayed Construction for more than a decade. Elliott Hall, named after Harriet Wiseman Elliott, opened its doors to the campus on March 1, 1953. Harriet Elliott came to the State Normal (now UNCG) in 1913 as a faculty member in the Department of History and Political Science. In 1953 she became Dean of Women and had a dream for “a place under one roof where the education gained in the classroom could be extended and coordinated with the “extracurricular”. In the fall of 1968, an extension of the student center was opened to provide more facilities for the expanding University. In the spring of 1974, the building name was officially changed to the Harriet Elliott University Center. In August 2001, a new two-story addition opened which houses the UNCG Bookstore and a food court. In January 2003, the original building reopened after undergoing an extensive two-year renovation. In January of 2006 the EUC/Library Connector opened connecting the Jackson Library, which serves as the academic heart of the campus with the Elliott University Center, the social center of the campus.

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, also known as UNC Greensboro, is a public liberal arts and research university in Greensboro, North Carolina, United States and is a constituent institution of the University of North Carolina system. However, UNCG, like all members of the UNC system, is a stand-alone university and awards its own degrees. The Michael B. Fleming Gymnasium is a 2,320-seat multi-purpose arena in Greensboro, North Carolina, United States. It is located in the Health and Human Performance Building, a $16.2 million facility that opened on the University of North Carolina at Greensboro's campus in June 1989. Its street address is 1000 Spring Garden Street, Greensboro, North Carolina. It is home to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Spartans wrestling and volleyball teams. It also hosts the women's basketball team. It was formerly home to the men's basketball team as well, but beginning in the 2009–10 basketball season, they moved to larger Greensboro Coliseum. Recently, Fleming Gym underwent a facelift to improve seating amenities. The new seating includes chairback seating on the lower half with bleacher bench seating in the upper half. Both sides were completed prior to the 2006-07 season. Also recently launched a project to overhaul the team locker room areas has begun that will included expanded, modernized space for numerous UNCG teams and also meeting areas for film breakdown and other activities.

UNCG Soccer Stadium is a 3,540-capacity stadium located in Greensboro, North Carolina. The stadium is home to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Spartans men's and women's soccer teams. It has also hosted the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship on several occasions. The stadium opened for soccer in 1991. For the championship games, extra bleachers were brought in to expand the capacity to 10,583 people.

UNCG has has a graduate enrollment of almost 3,800 students. There are approximately 40 certificate, 65 master’s, and 30 doctoral programs available to students. In addition to being directly admitted into our programs, some students dip their toes into the academic water by taking courses as non-degree students (VISIONS program) and later applying up to 9 hours toward a master’s degree. Still other students begin their studies in certificate programs and later work to complete a master’s degrees. The University is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a doctoral granting institution with high research. UNCG is also among a small group of universities that has earned the community engagement classification. This is a combination that is unique and affords the student the best of both worlds. Faculty bring the results of their research and community work into the classroom to make their teaching relevant to today’s problems. This multi-dimensional approach results in quality teaching that is supported through discovery of new knowledge and cooperative engagement with the community.

As part of its mission, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro’s Center for Housing and Community Studies (CHCS) is committed to investigating and understanding how the social, economic, environmental and spatial aspects of home and neighborhood affect people’s health, well-being, and life course. The CHCS staff has been working to identify substandard homes, weak housing markets, vacant and abandoned lots and buildings, systemic inequality, and other community conditions that impact the quality of life of residents of the Piedmont.

The MS in Accounting is a 30-hour program designed to provide students with the necessary technical knowledge, communication skills, and critical thinking abilities for successful careers in public accounting, industry, government, and not-for-profit organizations. The program also satisfies the 150-hour educational requirement adopted by a number of states, including North Carolina, for certification and licensure as a CPA. The program admits students with diverse backgrounds. While a majority of MS in Accounting students have undergraduate degree in Accounting or Business, a number of students have a Bachelor's or Master's degree in areas other than Business.

The Department of Consumer, Apparel, and Retail Studies will position you to create the next hot trend in apparel or to establish retail venues for today's consumers. In choosing a Retailing and Consumer Studies, Global Apparel and Related Industries Studies, or Apparel Product Design concentration, you will benefit from an innovative learning environment that prepares you for global careers in apparel product development, apparel design, retailing, and marketing. Internships are routinely offered in a variety of exciting venues, including New York, London, Atlanta and the West Coast. In addition, we provide unique access to industry leaders through the CARS Industry Advisory Board, composed of 20 leaders representing the apparel and retail industries. The Department of Classical Studies at UNCG is a dynamic, interdisciplinary department of approximately 60 majors that offers a BA degree in Classical Studies in three concentrations: Archaeology, Classical Civilization, and Classical Language and Literature. As the second-largest Classical Studies program in the state of North Carolina, we strive to provide a solid foundation in the Classical tradition for all university students and an excellent undergraduate major both for students interested in further work in Classical Studies and for those seeking a first or second major based strongly in the liberal arts.

The department seeks to prepare thoughtful and effective leaders in education through programs of study that are interdisciplinary in focus and that emphasize questions of moral concern, the cultural context of education, and a reconstructive vision for excellent and equitable schooling. The department offers four graduate programs: Master of School Administration, Post-Master’s Certificate in School Administration, Specialist in Education in Educational Leadership, Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership, and Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Studies with a concentration in cultural studies.
