The National Indian Forestry and Wildland Fire Management Program is a cooperative effort of the United States Department of the Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of the Deputy Director - Trust Services, Division of Forestry and Wildland Fire Management, Intertribal Timber Council and individual Tribal governments on reservations that contain forest resources. Nationally, this accounts for approximately 18 million acres of forested land within approximately 60 million acres of total land with wildland fire management responsibility. About 2,500 BIA & Tribal employees work together in Indian Country to protect and manage this federal land held in trust for client Tribes located on reservations. Our organization is recognized for its leadership and innovation in the management of forested land in North America. We strive to continually improve and enhance Indian forests to equip them with the needs of Indian people now and for generations to come. Timber, waterways, fish & wildlife populations, livestock, cultural resources, traditional medicine, spiritual practices, recreation, firewood usage, renewable energy and many other resources & activities benefit from good strategic management developed and implemented on a reservation. Depending on a Tribe's management objectives, wise stewardship of these resources and activities may also produce significant economic benefits for Tribal enterprises, Tribal governments and individual Tribal members (per capita dividends). Timber production is our flagship program and we are recognized as the leading expert on sustainable forestry through uneven-aged management. Our organization also plays a critical role in management of wildland fire throughout North America on all land: federal, state, county and private. Indian fire crews are the backbone of the national fire suppression force and are known for their firefighting skill, bravery and dedication to excellence.

History of the 116th Cavalry Brigade Combat Team Prepared by the Office of Historical Affairs 4040 W. Guard St. Boise, ID 83705 The 116th Cavalry, the “Snake River Regiment,” was constituted on March 4th, 1920 as the 1st Cavalry, Idaho National Guard. It was organized between March and November of that year in the Snake River Valley and was re-designated as the 116th Cavalry Regiment, Idaho National Guard in late 1920. The 116th was organized as part of the National Guard’s expansion of horse cavalry after World War I. The guard fielded 20 horse cavalry regiments assigned to the 21st, 22nd, 23rd, and 24th Cavalry Divisions and the 56th Cavalry Brigade. Many of the new cavalry regiments were assigned to western states in order to enlist experienced horseman. In 1940 the War Department decided to inactivate the four cavalry divisions and convert 14 cavalry regiments to artillery. The 116th was converted and re-designated as the 183rd Field Artillery Regiment. The 183rd was mobilized for Federal Service in April of 1941 and landed in France in mid-June of 1944 and fought from Normandy to Germany. The 183rd was de-mobilized and returned to home station at the end of the war. In 1947 the 183rd was reorganized as the 116th Cavalry Squadron. Two years later it was re-designated as the 116th Armored Cavalry Regiment, one of ten in the Army National Guard. The 116th served for 40 years as an armored cavalry regiment until its reorganization as a heavy armored brigade in September of 1989. The brigade was assigned to round out the 4th Infantry Division. From September 1989 until November 2005, the 116th Cavalry Brigade had units in Idaho, Montana, Utah, North Dakota, and Oregon. The 116th was one of only 15 enhanced separate brigades in the country as well as Idaho’s largest unit. It consisted of two armor battalions (one located in eastern Oregon), a combat engineer battalion, a support battalion, a field artillery battalion with one battery in Utah, a mechanized infantry battalion located in Montana, and an air defense battery from North Dakota. In July 1998, the 116th Cavalry Brigade deployed to the National Training Center (NTC) in Southern California to conduct the most intense training the U.S. Army offers during a three-week rotation. As only the second National Guard Brigade to deploy to the NTC since Desert Storm, the 116th shattered some preconceived ideas that National Guard combat units are unable to fight against a formidable enemy without an extensive train-up. The 116th not only fought a "World-Class Opposing Force" but they won two of the four battles. This was considered a very successful training rotation. This was also the first time everyone in the brigade had the chance to train and maneuver together. In 2001 some 300 soldiers from the 116th Cavalry Brigade were mobilized and deployed to Bosnia for six months, with approximately 100 soldiers coming from Idaho units and the remaining 200 from Montana. In May of 2004, the 116th mobilized in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom III; the largest deployment in Idaho history. It was re-designated as the 116th Brigade Combat Team (BCT) and added a signal company from New Jersey and Maryland along with other small supporting units. Upon arrival in Iraq, the 116th was temporarily attached to the 25th Infantry Division’s 2nd Brigade to support Iraqi elections and then in February of 2005 assumed responsibility for the provinces of Kirkuk and Al-Sulaymaniyah in northern Iraq, under the command and control of the 42nd Infantry Division. In November of 2005 the brigade returned from Iraq and was renamed the 116th Heavy Brigade Combat Team as the unit began its transformation to the Army’s new modular “Unit of Action” structure. In June of 2007 the unit was renamed the 116th Cavalry Brigade Combat Team in recognition of its cavalry heritage. The 116th is the only cavalry brigade authorized for the Army National Guard. Today the 116th Cavalry Brigade Combat Team remains headquartered in Boise, Idaho and maintains its two battalions located in Montana and Oregon. Idaho units include the 2nd Squadron, 116th Cavalry Regiment—the brigade’s armored reconnaissance squadron; the 1st Battalion, 148th Field Artillery Regiment; the 145th Brigade Support Battalion and the 116th Brigade Special Troops Battalion. The brigade also has two combined arms battalions, the 1st Battalion, 163rd Cavalry Regiment located in Montana, and the 3rd Battalion, 116th Cavalry Regiment located in eastern Oregon. Recent Activity: The 116th Cavalry Brigade was mobilized again in April 2010 for deployment to Iraq in support of Operation New Dawn. The 116th mobilized approximately 1,500 Soldiers from the Idaho Army National Guard, 600 Soldiers from the Montana Army National Guard, and 600 Soldiers from the Oregon Army National Guard. The brigade departed their home states in mid-September for pre-deployment training at Camp Shelby, Miss. The 116th arrived in Iraq in mid-November and assumed responsibility of their garrison command, force protection, and convoy security missions in early December.
