We are proud of the fact that many of us have been with First State Orthopaedics for more than 20 years. The physicians at First State Orthopaedics have become an integral part of the community in which we live. By devoting our energy and our time to many charitable causes, we have provided important assistance to those in the community who benefit most from our involvement. Sixteen of us are trained in orthopaedic surgery; two are trained in pain management/rehabilitation and one in non-operative sports medicine. We provide both surgical and nonsurgical treatment for orthopaedic illnesses and injuries, and are specially trained in the current state-of-the-art techniques. We serve as team physicians for over 20 high schools, Goldey-Beacom College, Wilmington University, and many local recreational and competitive leagues. We operate at Christiana, Wilmington, and St. Francis Hospitals, and the First State Surgery Center. Our doctors are usually available to all the local emergency and urgent care centers for consultation and treatment. We look forward to serving your orthopaedic needs and thank you for allowing us to participate in your care.
Mission: Delaware Nurses Association provides leadership for the nursing profession and promotes quality health care for consumers through education, advocacy, and influencing health care policy in the state of Delaware.
The Delaware Academy of Medicine was founded by fifteen doctors and one dentist in 1930. Their goal was to provide a professional library and a meeting place where doctors and dentists from all over the state could gather to exchange ideas and experiences, and so improve the quality and delivery of medical care. They also intended the Academy to be a historical repository for the Delaware medical community, documenting and memorializing the lives of its members. Dr. Flinn served as the Academy’s first president, occupying the office for twelve years. Many years later, in 1984, the Academy’s library was renamed in his honor, becoming the Lewis B. Flinn Library. Since its founding, the Delaware Academy of Medicine was housed in the former Bank of Delaware building, which was built in 1815 on Sixth and Market Streets in Wilmington. After the bank moved to newer quarters in 1931 and the building was left empty, Mrs. Henry B. Thompson and Mrs. Ernest I. duPont led a drive to raise funds to purchase the building for the newly founded Academy. With their help and support, the building was relocated to the Lovering Avenue in Wilmington. The Academy took up residence there in 1932. In 1958, an addition was constructed, expanding the auditorium and creating more office space for the various medical groups that had their offices in the building. In the fall of 2006 the Academy of Medicine moved into the newly constructed John H. Ammon Medical Education Center at the Stanton Campus of the Christiana Care Health System. The Ammon Center, run by Christiana Care Health System, provides the Academy of Medicine with an excellent home, and a multitude of partnership opportunities for which we are deeply appreciative. The medical libraries of the Academy and Christiana Care were combined to create the new Lewis B. Flinn Medical Library, and adjacent to that facility is the Gail P. Gill Consumer Health Library. The administrative offices of the Academy are one level down from the libraries.
