The Purdue Bell Tower was constructed in 1995, at Purdue University, through a gift from the class of 1948.Heavilon Hall TowerThe current Bell Tower's inspiration comes from the bell tower that was part of the old Heavilon Hall, demolished in 1956. Heavilon Hall was dedicated on January 19, 1894, as part of Purdue's Engineering School. Four days later, the building caught fire and was destroyed. In light of this tragedy, James H. Smart, Purdue's president at the time, declared that a new tower would go up "one brick higher." Smart's inspirational words have since become a sort of motto for the university. According to legend, however, the bell tower was actually built 9 bricks higher. This second Heavilon tower was completed in December 1895 with clocks on each of the four sides. On April 8, 1897, four bells were installed. These bells would mark every quarter-hour until Heavilon was demolished in 1956.Purdue Bell TowerThrough a gift from the class of 1948, a new bell tower was completed in 1995. The new tower stands 160 feet tall and, like the original, has a clock on each of its four faces. The bells from the original Heavilon tower hang at the top of the tower and are struck by electric clappers to ring at the hour, half-hour and end of classes. In addition, a computerized carillon plays Purdue's fight songs and the alma mater at 12:20 pm, 5:00 pm, and 10:00 pm. At the base of the tower is a time capsule that is to be opened in 2095.In 2008, the bell tower was incorporated into the university's emergency notification system. The tower now contains a loudspeaker and sirens that can be heard outdoors throughout the academic portion of campus.

The School of Engineering Technology offers degree programs in mechanical engineering technology, electrical engineering technology, manufacturing engineering technology and engineering technology. These programs encompass nine majors, (including audio engineering technology, automation and systems integration engineering technology, computer engineering technology, electrical engineering technology, energy engineering technology, engineering technology, mechanical engineering technology, mechatronics engineering technology, and robotics engineering technology), so you can specialize in specific areas. In Purdue's engineering technology degree programs, class and lab projects allow you to discover how to use materials, sensors, mechanisms, electronic parts, and processes to develop and run the products and systems we need. No matter which major you choose, you will work with the latest technologies and use them to solve society's technical challenges. This is best illustrated by our industry-sponsored capstone projects for seniors. You will work with an industry partner - a real customer - to solve their challenge in a realm such as safety, automation, or energy. Your engineering technology degree will prepare you to make an immediate impact in the workforce - as an engineer, problem solver, communicator and leader.
Purdue University hosts one of the nation's largest Fraternity/Sorority Communities, with approximately 5,000 students participating in one of the 48 men's fraternities or 32 women's sororities. About 18% of Purdue's undergraduates are members of a Greek-letter organization. Since the founding of the first Purdue fraternity in 1875, Purdue Greeks have maintained a steady and influential presence on campus. Several of Purdue's most distinguished graduates are members of fraternities and sororities, including astronauts Neil Armstrong (Phi Delta Theta), Gene Cernan (Phi Gamma Delta), Roger Chaffee (Phi Kappa Sigma), Greg Harbaugh (Sigma Chi), David Wolf (Alpha Tau Omega), and Mary Ellen Weber (Phi Mu). The first (Armstrong) and last (Cernan) astronauts on the moon are Purdue graduates - and fraternity men. Fraternity and Sorority Life is one of many campus involvement opportunities at Purdue that help students make a large university seem smaller. Most fraternity and sorority organizations offer housing and meal service for their members. These organizations provide friendship, intramural athletic competition, social activities, community service, and academic support for their members. Students develop a strong sense of belonging to their organization and loyalty to Purdue University through the Fraternity and Sorority community. Membership is lifelong, and alumni activities are numerous at the national and local level.
