Brown's Island is an artificial continental island on the James River in Richmond, Virginia, formed by the Haxall Canal. Part of the city's James River Park, it is the popular venue of a large number of outdoor concerts and festivals in the spring and summer, such as the weekly Friday Cheers concert series or Dominion Riverrock. The Rivanna Subdivision Trestle crosses over the island.GeographyBrown's Island was formed in 1789 with the beginnings of the Haxall Canal. For many years, there were two islands, Brown's and Johnson's Island with a spillway in between. Today, the islands are one.HistoryPre-industrialThe island's first settler was Elijah Brown, for whom it was named. He acquired the land in 1826. A later owner named Neilson tried to rename the island as Neilson's Island, but it did not last.During the American Civil War, the island was the home of the Confederate States Laboratory. The C.S. Laboratory produced ammunition, friction primers, percussion caps, and other ordnance for the Confederate war effort. On Friday, March 13, 1863, an explosion occurred in a section of the laboratory that killed forty five individuals and left twenty three others injured. Most of the killed and injured were young girls who were the labor force used on the island.Industrial ageIn 1894, the Richmond Union Passenger Railway opened a coal power plant on the island. In 1899, a hydroelectric power plant on the island's east side, running off the Haxall Canal. Virginia Power also opened a coal power plant nearby in 1936.

The Science Museum of Virginia is a science museum located in Richmond, Virginia. Established in 1970, it is an agency of the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is housed in the former Broad Street Station, built in 1919.HistoryEarly proposalsIn 1906, the Virginia General Assembly approved funds for the construction of a simple "exhibits center" to display mineral and timber exhibits being assembled for the Jamestown Exposition of 1907. After the exposition ended, many of the items were moved to Richmond's Capitol Square. The "State Museum" as it came to be known opened in 1910, adding displays of natural historical specimens from a variety of state agencies to its collection over the years.In 1942, the General Assembly created a study commission to consider establishing an official State science museum. That commission succeeded in endorsing the creation of a "Virginia Museum of Science" in 1943. Unfortunately, the fiscal restraints and pressing concerns of World War II, and the recession which followed it prevented the General Assembly from taking further action. In 1946, the General Assembly suspended work on a State science museum awaiting appropriate space and funds.By 1964, the General Assembly resumed the project of a "State Museum". A new study was commissioned, and once again, the establishment of a "museum of science, archaeology, and natural history" was proposed, but this measure died in the committee. Shortly thereafter, the museum's displays and collections in the basement of the state's Financial Building were gradually disassembled and their collections were dispersed to various State universities.

The Speakeasy at the Hippodrome Theater Venues gives homage to the 1920’s prohibition era. Located in the Taylor Mansion and on the site of an actual historical speakeasy, its high ceilings, dark wood and period lighting create memories of wilder times that were part of Richmond’s 2nd Street lore. The Speakeasy hosts a variety of events including concerts, dance parties, comedy shows, networking events, banquets, cocktail receptions, and private parties.

A summer music camp designed for singers entering grades 6 through 12, this week-long camp provides singers with a comprehensive choral experience. Singers will be placed in choirs according to voicing and ability level. Throughout the week they have classes in theory & sight-singing (by level), drama, vocal technique and world drumming! On the final day camp, participants present a Gala Concert for family and friends!

Backroom Comedy at Balliceaux is a new, booked comedy show from the guy who brought you Comedy at Pie and Comedy from Home Sweet Home in collaboration with touring comic, David C. Wingfield. David C. Wingfield is a local comic who made it big and has toured all over the country as a headliner and a feature act. Jacob McFadden is a local guy who keeps it breezy. Each show will be booked with some of the best comics in the city. Each comic will be doing their best material in one of the best venues for only $5 - all of which goes to the performers on the show. This is not an open-mic. This is a real comedy show put together each month just for you.

Artemis Gallery was established by John T Crutchfield in Richmond, VA in 1997. It is located at 1601 W Main St in the heart of the Fan District. The Gallery is named after Artemis, the Greek goddess of the moon associated with mystery and known for her skills with the bow & arrow. Likewise the artists represented in the gallery hold the same qualities of mystery, creativity, and skill. After extensive studio and exhibition experience in his own business Metallic Art Graphics, Crutchfield decided to open a retail space to showcase his own work along with other up and coming artists. The Gallery houses a growing collection of fine art and crafts gathered through attending and trading at national exhibitions. Artemis Gallery has exhibited over 170 national and international artists at its monthly openings. These openings usually take part in the First Fridays art walk along with the rest of the Main St gallery community. These openings are full of contemporary art and live music. They encourage the community to celebrate the high appreciation for fine arts and crafts.

Here are a few guidelines to booking: -Gallery5 has a curfew of 11pm Sunday thru-Thursday and 12am Friday and Saturday. There is no exception to these time frames. -No more than 3 bands are allowed on any weeknight bill and no more than 4 bands on any weekend bill. This means it is highly unlikely for us to book two out of town touring bands on the same bill. This means we will not book your fest. -The price and schedule must be planned before announcing. -No outside alcohol (or drinks in general). If a performer is caught with outside alcohol the show will be shut down on the spot and all door money will go to Gallery5. -ALL ticket sales are to go through Gallery5. Tickets will only be available via Gallery5's eventbrite and our staff at the door. -Load in is 630PM, doors/sound tech is at 7PM and the show starts at 8PM on weekdays and for 4 band weekend shows. -Load in 730PM, doors/sound tech at 8PM and music at 9PM on weekends for 3 band bills. If you would like different time frames please ask. (Our percentage and sound fees will go up). -Gallery5 provides all staff.
