The anticipation builds in the Main Hall as people find their seats, peruse programs, and visit with friends and family. The orchestra tunes its instruments. The room is alive, crackling with a sense of urgency that comes only after weeks of waiting for the moment that is about to begin. Then, the lights go down and the curtain goes up. It is here, in this moment, where friends and strangers begin to share a common experience that moves them to tears and cheers with such power, splendor and grace that it borders on magical. Each year, a quarter of a million people come to the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines and experience the wonder, the suspense, and the joy of live theater, with nothing between them and the actors but the drama of the moment. It happens over and over again. The anticipation. The urgency. The applause. The cheers. Since 1979, the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines has grown from a dream of a small group of local business leaders, to the cornerstone of the downtown Des Moines redevelopment initiative. The Civic Center of Greater Des Moines will serve as an outstanding community performing arts center, accessible to all, where people may be educated, entertained and enlightened.

The Dinner Detective is the largest, award-winning, interactive comedic murder mystery dinner show in the United States. We are now running public and private shows in cities across the country every week. Our immensely popular shows are set in the present day. Unlike other murder mystery dinner shows, here you will find no cheesy costumes, no recited campy dialogue and no hokey song and dance. Our performers are dressed just like everyone else, leaving all of the guests to suspect who is a part of the show and who is not. In many instances, guests are seated with the performers and don't even realize it until they die...the performers, that is! Our Detectives proceed to interrogate everyone and find clues as more people die. At the end of the night, prizes are awarded to the Top Sleuth who solves the crime.

Black Sheep's mission is to create an acute disturbance in the central nervous system of Des Moines. With a focus on "The Devil's Drink", Tequila, Black Sheep will gather most of its aesthetic elements from the varying art movements throughout history along with subtle elements of Catholicism and 1920’s and 30’s era speakeasy culture. Our movement and presentation are loosley based on the Dada or Dadaism movement in art that begin in the WWI era and peaked from 1916 to 1922. The movement focused on visual arts, literature, poetry, music, theater and theory. Dadaism focused its political beliefs through a rejection of the era’s prevailing standard in art through anti-cultural work. The sole purpose was to ridicule the meaninglessness of the modern world as its participants saw it. This theory is exactly what Black Sheep sets out to do, reject prevailing standards, go against the grain, and become the new movement of underground speakeasies inevitably and indirectly ridiculing meaningless concepts and accepted standards in today’s nightlife. Des Moines lacks big city appeal partly due to the fact that people will accept any new concept, even if it’s mediocre. Black Sheep hopes to bring an NYC underground club type of feel by focusing on exclusivity and merging elements of speakeasies, key clubs and different eras in art and culture to create a contradictory theme that will gel to an unmatched individual identity.

Except this time, we are in the basement of a renovated historic firehouse. Pretty rad. Our unique and versatile event venue has a full bar and stage. Hours of operation vary due to the variety of events we are able to host. Check our calendar for the most current information: http://desmoinessocialclub.org/the-basement/ Events. The Basement is home to an eclectic mix of recurring events like trivia nights, dance parties, live music, and comedy. However, this is just a taste of what The Basement has to offer. Expect to be entertained far beyond the traditional bar setting. You can even rent the space for your own event or private party. Even More Drinks. A refreshed bar features Iowa craft beers, handcrafted cocktails, and a “couple of steps above dive bar” wine list. We also have a special cocktail menu for your imbibing pleasure. Plus, the Rooftop! The firehouse has one of the most picturesque views of downtown Des Moines. So, naturally we want to party up there. We’ll have even more events on the Rooftop Patio during the summer and tables/chairs/umbrellas for lounging. Special thanks to Juice Magazine and Register Media for their support of The Basement!
