The John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University (also known as Harvard Kennedy School and HKS) is a public policy and public administration school, of Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States. The school offers master's degrees in public policy, public administration, and international development, grants several doctoral degrees, and many executive education programs. It conducts research in subjects relating to politics, government, international affairs, and economics.The School's primary campus is located on John F. Kennedy Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States. The main buildings overlook the Charles River, southwest of Harvard Yard and Harvard Square, on the site of a former MBTA Red Line trainyard. The School is adjacent to the public riverfront John F. Kennedy Memorial Park.
Launched in November 2011, the Harvard Innovation Lab (i-lab) serves as a resource for students from across Harvard interested in entrepreneurship and innovation. The programming offered by the i-lab is designed to help students grow their ventures at any stage of development and covers a wide range of disciplines. The i-lab fosters collaboration among Harvard students, faculty, entrepreneurs, and members of the Allston and Greater Boston communities. Community members are invited to attend many of the events hosted at the i-lab, to stop at the InnoBreak Café (offering coffee and snacks), and utilize our community lobby open workspace and WiFi.
The House is named for the Reverend John Thornton Kirkland, Class of 1789, who served as President of Harvard from 1810 to 1828 in an important period of growth and expansion for the College. Kirkland House was one of the seven original residential Houses established in 1931. It is composed of Smith Halls, which were constructed in 1914 as freshman dormitories; Bryant Hall and the Masters' Residence, both constructed in 1931; and Hicks House, which dates from 1762 and serves as the House Library. Kirkland students also live in the 20 DeWolfe Street apartments. Located in Smith Halls, the dining hall and Junior Common Room boast magnificent woodwork and high ceilings that highlight Kirkland's classic charm and elegance. Kirkland traditions are stepped in history both recent and colonial. Playing on the history of Kirkland's Hicks House, once the quarters for officers in General Washington's army, an opening ceremony marks the start of each school year. Students and Masters march behind a troupe of Revolutionary Era re-enactors who provide musical accompaniment on drum and fife. Kirkland residents take advantage of the House's relatively small size by hosting more intimate community events. Most notably, Secret Santa Week features skits performed by "Elves" for their "Santees." The week of celebration culminates in a Kirkland-only dinner and dance to toast the end of the semester. Kirkland House is one of twelve undergraduate residential Houses at Harvard University, located near the Charles River in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It was named after John Thornton Kirkland, president of Harvard University from 1810 to 1828.BackgroundSome of the buildings were built in 1914 but construction was not completed until 1933. Kirkland is one of the smallest Houses at Harvard, but has nevertheless managed to win many intramural and house-spirit contests, most recently the 2012 Straus Cup. Before Harvard opted to use a lottery system to assign housing to upperclassmen, Kirkland was considered the "jock house" because its location near Anderson Bridge and the Soldiers Field made it a desirable home and convenient place to dine for Harvard athletes.The first Master of Kirkland House was Edward A. Whitney. Walter Eugene Clark succeeded Whitney as the second Master on September 1, 1935. The current Masters of Kirkland House are Tom and Verena Conley, and the Resident Dean is Cory Way.Kirkland House boasts many traditions, such as its opening ceremony (complete with Minutemen reenactors playing the drums and fife as they process around the House, followed by the house masters, tutors, and students), Secret Santa week (an in-house-only series of gifts, jokes, and events) -- accompanied by bawdy skits in the dining hall, and a winter dance nicknamed "IncestFest" (a debaucherous dance open only to members of the house).Kirkland House has a gym, lounge, game room, music rooms, and performance and event spaces for students. It also has a wall honoring the history of the Kirkland House Boat Club, which has won Harvard's intramural men's sweeps regatta more often than any other House. Most recently, Christopher D.H. Row, a resident tutor, art history doctoral candidate, and master of divinity student, led the KHBC to five consecutive victories and was awarded the title of "Admiral-for-Life." Among the most recent additions is a brewery, operated and maintained by the Kirkland House Brew Club, which occupies the space once used as the house darkroom.
A memorial to President Kennedy, The Institute of Politics' mission is to unite and engage students, particularly undergraduates, with academics, politicians, activists, and policymakers on a non-partisan basis and to stimulate and nurture their interest in public service and leadership. The Institute strives to promote greater understanding and cooperation between the academic world and the world of politics and public affairs. Led by a Director, Senior Advisory Board, Student Advisory Committee, and staff, the Institute provides wide-ranging opportunities for both Harvard students and the general public.
Mather House is one of twelve undergraduate residential Houses at Harvard University. It was named after Increase Mather, a Puritan in the Massachusetts Bay Colony who served as the acting president of Harvard University from 1685 to 1692.Opened in 1970, its house Co-Masters are Christie McDonald, former chair of Harvard's Department of Romance Languages and Literatures, and Michael Rosengarten, an adjunct professor of medicine at McGill University.Mather is known for its large suites composed of single rooms and common rooms, as well as its nineteen-story concrete tower built in a Brutalist style. Its blocky concrete architecture reflects the anti-uprising style of the day of its construction and makes it the butt of jokes, such as being known as "the box that Dunster came in." However, Mather residents are guaranteed single bedrooms for all three years of their residency there, whereas it is not uncommon to find upperclassmen sharing rooms in many of Harvard's other Houses. The low-rise which surrounds the courtyard has large suites with common rooms, while the nineteen-story high-rise does not. However, the high-rise has larger bedrooms and views of Boston and Cambridge. Mather is the river house farthest from Harvard Yard, though the school provides shuttle service from its courtyard every ten minutes during weekdays. Mather House was a favorite choice for hard-partying varsity athletes before housing assignments were randomized by the school.
Eliot House is one of twelve undergraduate residential Houses at Harvard University. It is one of the seven original houses at the College. Opened in 1931, the house was named after Charles William Eliot, who served as president of the university for forty years (1869–1909).TraditionsBefore Harvard opted to use a lottery system to assign residences to upperclassmen, Eliot was known as a 'prep' house, providing accommodation to the university's social elite, and being known as "more Harvard than Harvard". Describing Eliot House in the late 1950s and early 1960s, author Alston Chase wrote, "lthough most Harvard houses in those days reflected the values of Boston Brahmin society... Eliot was more extreme".Some traditions of Eliot House are the annual Spring Fete, the charity event An Evening with Champions, the Eliot Boat Club, formal dinners such as the Charles Eliot Dinner, and a strong sense of house pride. The motto 'Floreat Domus de Eliot' and 'Domus' are traditional chants and greetings, particularly on Housing Day, when freshman find out their housing assignments.Movie appearancesEliot's prominent belltower is featured in many films, including two screen shots in Old School; Legally Blonde; Chasing Liberty; and Euro Trip, which features the tower at the end of the film, incorrectly identifying it as Oberlin College. Eliot House is also featured prominently in Love Story and The Social Network.

Established in 1980 by the Daniel and Florence V. Guggenheim Foundation, the Program in Criminal Justice Policy and Management has had a continuing commitment to include practitioners in its work to: Devise situations in which the researchers learn from the practitioners and the practitioners learn from both the researchers and each other; Synthesize and extract the best ideas; Work to put these ideas into good currency Integrating theory with practice and academicians with practitioners—through research, Executive Sessions, teaching, writing and publishing—the Program in Criminal Justice has attempted to challenge conventional wisdom in various domains of criminal justice policy. The Program in Criminal Justice takes a sector-wide view of criminal justice, focusing on the policies and management of multiple institutions whose work contributes to safety and justice, rather than specializing on issues of policing, courts, or corrections. By examining multiple institutions at once, the program takes a broad view of several issues that affect the entire justice and safety sector, such as transparency, legitimacy, protection of human rights, and cost-effectiveness. The Program also takes an international, comparative approach to questions of safety and justice. This includes research to expand the range of empirical indicators available to facilitate comparisons among countries, particularly comparisons that cut across legal traditions and levels of economic development.
Our research provides evidence-based insights on the role of gender in shaping economic, political and social opportunities available to individuals. We identify successful interventions and measure their impact on women, men, and society, then share recommendations on what policies, organizational practices and leadership techniques help close involuntary gaps. We train today’s leaders and prepare future leaders to create a more gender equal world, while providing women with skills and tools to successfully navigate existing systems. We draw on Harvard University’s unparalleled faculty expertise and its global reach to impact the thinking of those who make decisions across sectors.

The Saguaro is a cactus that grows in the Sonoran desert in the Southwestern United States. There are rich parallels between the Saguaro and social capital (or civic engagement). Saguaros were for some time undervalued by modern American society and often razed. Saguaros are bellwether indicators of the health of the ecosystem. Saguaros have an invisible root system that is multiples of the visible height of the cacti. And like most social capital, saguaros grow slowly (husbanding what nourishment the ecosystem provides) and are tough, long-term survivors.
The Public Policy and Leadership Conference (PPLC) is an annual conference for college freshmen and sophomores that is held at the Harvard John F. Kennedy School of Government. Through intensive immersion to the field of public policy, PPLC prepares undergraduates of underrepresented backgrounds to pursue graduate study and careers in public service.
