For more than 50 years, the Shepherd University Foundation has strengthened the work and service of Shepherd University. The Foundation receives and administers private funds for student scholarships, academic and program support, and faculty excellence awards as well as other university initiatives such as campus renewal and beautification. Located on the campus of Shepherd University in historic McMurran Hall, the office houses a professional staff of five and is led by an independent volunteer board of directors. Our success is a direct result of our generous donors who have helped to make a difference in the lives of thousands of Shepherd students over the decades.
We have lead and hosted several community outreach programs, such as, project management workshops, FLL events, and a STEM conference aimed towards middle school girls. All of these programs offered networking opportunities, certifications, accolades, and growth opportunities that aren't offered in the classroom. We have traveled, competed, designed and built innovative projects to expand upon curriculum objectives. We are constantly researching and building new projects that could, one day, help advance humanity. We are also closely working with the local school systems to help and encourage girls to pursue higher education in the STEM fields.
Common Readings are prevalent at liberal arts colleges and universities and have been around for at least twenty years. The purpose of a Common Reading is “to provide a common academic experience for all first-year students and to strengthen the academic atmosphere of the institution from the first day the student arrives on campus.” *(Patterson, 2002, p. 8). There are other important related reasons, such as connecting students to their peers and instructors and creating a unifying force in which all incoming students share from the very start of their educational journey. *Patterson, L. (2002). New ideas in first-year reading programs from around the country. First-Year Experience Newsletter (FYE), 143, 8-9.
