The childhood obesity epidemic has reached alarming levels. It is an epidemic affecting not only the physical health of children, families, and community, but also their psychosocial, academic, and economic potential. Multiple studies show increasing levels over the last thirty years, with a tripling of prevalence over that time period. Obese children face a myriad of health, emotional and social consequences as a result of this epidemic. At least 1/3 of Lincoln's children are considered overweight or obese. Minority children, impoverished children, and children who live in certain Lincoln neighborhoods without access to healthy foods and safe play spaces are disproportionately affected by the obesity epidemic. These populations have even higher rates of obesity, diabetes, early heart disease and are at risk for shorter life expectancies. Teach a Kid to Fish is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 2008 by Karla Lester, M.D., who left her practice to address the growing epidemic of poor nutrition and physical inactivity in our community's children. Working in partnership with community members, Teach a Kid to Fish envisions creating a community solution to this growing epidemic.
The Karen People in Nebraska The Karen (pronounced Ka-REN) are an ethnic group from the mountainous border regions of Burma and Thailand, where they are the second largest ethnic group in each country. They have long been subject to persecution and ethnic cleansing by the Burmese government, and many have been living in refugee camps in Thailand for years before being resettled to Nebraska. There are approximately 5,500 Karen living in Nebraska with an additional 300 refugees from other ethnic groups in Burma. Because of the employment opportunity and family reunion, Omaha currently has the largest and fastest-growing Karen populations in the U.S. Other communities in Nebraska with a large Karen population include Lincoln, Crete, Nebraska City, Grand Island, Norfolk and Dakota City. WHO ARE THE KAREN? Burma is a country of great ethnic diversity, its estimated population of 48-50 million being divided between at least 8 major ethnic groups such as Kachin, Karenni, Karen, Chin, Arakanese, Mon, Burmese and Shan. Each ethnicity has their own languages and customs that differ from one another. The Karen, pronounced (Ka- REN), are indigenous to Thailand and Burma and number around 7 million which is the second largest ethnic with the majority of the Karen living inside Burma. Most Karen are farmers in the jungles of southern Burma and eastern Thailand. The religions of the Karen majority are Buddhism and Animism with Christians making up about 30% of the population. The Karen are made up of smaller subgroups who, in some cases, speak in their own dialects. There are two main groups of Karen: The Sgaw (S'waw) and the Pwos. Karen are known for their colorful traditional clothes and for their energetic and jubilant festival dances.

Camp Kesem is a nationwide community, driven by passionate college student leaders, that supports children through and beyond their parent’s cancer. A program of Kesem, Camp Kesem operates over 70 free summer camps in 33 states for children ages 6 to 16 who have been touched by a parent’s cancer. This camping experience has a lasting impact on children by providing them a peer-support network that understands their unique needs, builds confidence and strengthens their communication skills. In 2015, Camp Kesem served over 5,000 children coast-to-coast - all funded by generous donations from individuals, foundations, and corporate partners.
WRT is dedicated solely to the rescue and rehabilitation of Nebraska's orphaned and injured wildlife, and its return to its natural habitat. WRT was founded in 1979 in Lincoln, Nebraska. Working under state and federal permits, WRT is a non-profit, independent, all volunteer organization, made up of caring individuals from all walks of life. They share a common bond, a love and respect for wildlife. WRT members show their concern in a variety of ways: hands-on animal care, transportation, phone duty, public relations, education, cage-building, and fund-raising. Besides wildlife rescue, WRT provides educational programs to civic groups, including senior citizens groups, Scout troops, school classes, churches, and nature centers. These presentations explain the importance of the ecosystem and the balance of nature, as well as the role of Wildlife Rescue Team, Inc. in rescuing and rehabilitating wildlife. The value of WRT's work and that of other wildlife rehabilitation groups is recognized on a national and international scale. Wildlife Rescue Team, Inc. is a three-time winner of the national "Take Pride in America" award. Wildlife Rescue Team, Inc. operates with no federal, state or city funding, but depends totally upon private contributions, membership fees and donations of supplies and services. It takes a great deal of time and money to provide the necessary care for the rehabilitation of wildlife. No salaries are paid to any member. Funds go to enhancing public awareness, to purchase food, medicine, caging materials, and veterinary care. For the first two weekends in March and April, we help anyone looking for a special occasion dress! We have a large variety colors and sizes to choose from and all the dresses are donated. Events we can dress include proms, homecomings, military balls, any formal dance or chance where you'd want to look your best and a plain 'ol dress just won't do!
We take in donations of clothing, bedding, baby items such as strollers and high chairs and GIVE them to children in the foster care system in the State of Nebraska FREE OF CHARGE!
The years of healing that have taken place in this HOME and the storytelling along the journey to wholeness have created magic here. There are no teachers and students here but only people who may be a little ways down the path and mutual respect and increasing understanding. We will be posting the activities that we will be hosting for you to share in. We will be discovering new artists, musicians, learning about dreams, writing books and living our dreams here. As humans we are always creating, creating, creating. Life is a canvas for which we paint our lives, careers, relationships and whatever else we desire here on Earth. We are all Artists and Co-Creators.
The foundation was established in 2006 to assist eligible cancer patients with the expense of their gasoline while receiving cancer treatment. In 2012, we added a program to help patients with the cost of their oral cancer and supportive medications. Our goal is to imagine a culture in which every cancer patient can have access to their needed cancer treatments. Our purpose is to help eliminate the financial stress so they can focus on fighting and recovery. The Heartland Cancer Foundation is an independent, non profit qualified 501(c)(3) organization. Colegio Kids is a 501(c)3 charitable organization dedicated to helping needy kids in the Dominican Republic obtain a quality education. We support mostly K-12 students, but have helped our best graduates obtain a University Education. All donations go directly to benefit the kids. No overhead costs are charged
In 2001, the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska (PTON) chartered the Ponca Economic Development Corporation (PEDCO) as a tribal corporation responsible for providing the Tribe with sustainable capital investment opportunities. Ponca Development is the trade name. Ponca Development operates outside of the political processes of the Tribe and provides oversight responsibility for the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska’s economic development activities. In order to remain free of the political process and at the direction of the PTON’s Tribal Council, Ponca Development successfully negotiated its own Self-Determination (638) Contract with the Bureau of Indian Affairs. A Board of Directors is comprised of PTON, tribal members and is chartered with responsibility for developing business opportunities, investment vehicles and tribal economic development ventures. In 2012, the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska chartered OSNI Ponca, LLC to be the new tribal corporation for economic development. PEDCO will remain in existence, but will act as the non-profit community development corporation for the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska.
