Nashville, TN 37203

(615) 598-5600

Located in the historic Chestnut Square building, threesquared is a contemporary art space dedicated to showcasing artwork that exemplifies the highest standard of aesthetic and technical expertise. The gallery features artists working nationally and internationally in a variety of media including painting, photography, sculpture, and new media. In 2008, Dane Carder began exhibiting works within his studio space, which is where threesquared still resides. Six exhibitions later, in 2011, Sara Estes was brought on as gallery director and curator to turn the casual exhibition space into a dedicated gallery, hosting events and exhibits on a regular basis. The 100-year-old industrial building that houses the gallery, known to Nashvillians simply as "Chestnut Square", was once the site of May Hosiery Mill, a factory that provided socks to the American astronauts on Apollo 2 for their moon-landing 1969. The mill closed in the 1980's, and is now home to twelve artist studios and two contemporary art galleries.

Too Black Too Fast
Distance: 1.1 mi Competitive Analysis
427 Chestnut
Nashville, TN 37203

Blacks became involved in horse racing in America in 1607 and ruled the sport from 1607-1910. The riders were slaves, small in stature and very young – mere boys, typically be- tween 13-15 years old. It was a time when the intelligence, skill and ability of Black jockeys – let alone the very humanity of Blacks – was in question. Landowners wagered money, tobacco crops, deeds to farms, slaves, or just about anything of value. The best master-and-slave racing teams were so successful they resorted to trickery to get people to race against them. One such story even involved our seventh president of the United States, Andrew “Old Hickory” Jackson. Still another is that of a Black jockey who accumulated so much wealth, he hired an agent to handle his winnings and negotiate the freedom of his entire family. The master and slave relationship in the horse racing industry blurred most societal and racial lines of the time. Essentially Black horse jockeys and trainers were treated like modern day jockeys were crowned princes from 1607-1910
