Mount Vernon was the plantation house of George Washington, first President of the United States and his wife, Martha Dandridge Custis Washington. The estate is situated on the banks of the Potomac River in Fairfax County, Virginia, near Alexandria, across from Prince George's County, Maryland. The Washington family had owned land in the area since the time of Washington's great-grandfather in 1674. In 1739 they embarked on an expansion of the estate that continued under George Washington, who came into possession of the estate in 1754, but did not become its sole owner until 1761.The mansion is built of wood in a loose Palladian style, and was constructed by George Washington in stages between 1758 and 1778. It occupies the site of an earlier, smaller house built by George Washington's father Augustine, some time between 1726 and 1735. It remained Washington's country home for the rest of his life. Following his death in 1799, under the ownership of several successive generations of the family, the estate progressively declined as revenues were insufficient to maintain it adequately. In 1858, the house's historical importance was recognized and it was saved from ruin by The Mount Vernon Ladies' Association; this philanthropic organization acquired it together with part of the Washington property estate. Escaping the damage suffered by many plantation houses during the American Civil War, Mount Vernon was restored.

The goal of the Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington is to foster new scholarly research about George Washington and the Founding Era, while safeguarding original Washington books and manuscripts. In 1986, the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association broadened its vision beyond the preservation of Mount Vernon, and sought to extend the education of Washington’s life, achievements, and character - to the entire world. In 2010, that mission expanded to include the construction of a new research library. The MVLA announced the creation of the Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington to further the organization’s mission of advancing appreciation and understanding of George Washington. The announcement resulted from a remarkable gift of $38 million from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation, the largest received in the history of the MVLA. The Campaign for the Library – with Gay Hart Gaines, the Vice Regent for Florida, as chair – set an ambitious goal to raise $100 million to construct the library. The Campaign exceeded its goal by raising $106.4 million by June 2013, all provided by private donors. Groundbreaking took place in April 2011, and the Library opened its doors on September 27, 2013. The National Library, a 45,000 square foot facility, safeguards Washington’s books and manuscripts, approximately 1500 additional 18th-century books, as well as thousands of important 19th-century newspapers, manuscripts, and documents. It also serves as a scholarly retreat, creates educational outreach programs, and provides seminars and training programs with a special focus on Washington’s leadership. The Library emphasizes educational outreach, touching the lives of students, teachers, and scholars across the nation.

"The Laila Rose Foundation was established in 2006, in loving memory of Laila Rose whom we lost at the tender age of four in a tragic automibile accident, along with her devoted mother, Lisa Engh. As a result of this tragedy we resolved to turn our grief into action and find a way for Laila's legacy to bring the sort of joy to others that she brought to our lives as a daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece and friend. Our mission is to assist one child, one family at a time and give them hope as they struggle against unsurmountable odds. We believe in the bright futures of adoptable children around the world with correctable medical conditions, and in the adoptive families who are able to see the beauty and grace in each of these children and want to make them a part of their lives.

Our objective is to provide an opportunity to orphans who demonstrate the capability to attend secondary school. In that way, Zorba’s Orphans Fund will not only help mitigate the spread of HIV/AIDS in these countries, but we will also help to stop the cycle of poverty among the world’s most vulnerable groups. We will partner with established orphanages and non-profit organizations to provide financial aid to these organizations thereby giving an opportunity to orphans to obtain post secondary, sports, and spiritual education. Through post primary education, our overarching goal is to empower orphans to provide for themselves in their adult years so that they can contribute to the socioeconomic development of their societies.

American Celiac Disease Alliance was founded to give voice to issues impacting individuals with celiac disease. By uniting researchers, food manufacturers, patient support groups and others, the organization seeks to advance research, raise awareness, and change public policy to improve life for individuals with celiac disease.

Since 1989, BIS has helped individuals in Northern Virginia and outlying suburbs. In the past few years, BIS has expanded services to include Fredericksburg and many other Counties. Our Case Management Services are provided at no cost. We offer additional services either at no cost or on a sliding scale, including independent living skills training, respite care, specialized clubhouse programs and social skills training. At any given time, we are helping approximately 500 individuals in the region manage the challenges of living with a brain injury.
