Artist Statement “In my early days I had limited myself by only drawing. My transition into painting forced me to explore new materials pushing various scientific principles. As I continue to discover painting it becomes more and more intriguing. My art is not driven by creating finished work but merely the courses I take to get there. In a sense I am a problem solver...The choices I make will overall impact the final piece. As I continue to practice my craft these complex decisions become more instinctive. I feel my best art takes form when I follow that innate voice. Art is less a struggle and more a natural pursuance of ideas. As I grow I hope to find harmony between each material to illuminate the influence of these instincts.” Ian M Sherwin Biography Ian M. Sherwin is a 2000 graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, which he attended on full scholarship. He is a contract artist for the Field Museum, designing programs for children and families that are at the intersection of art and science. He also teaches art classes at his art gallery in Chicago and has worked with special needs children in the Chicago Public Schools. Several years ago, Ian lost the sight in one of his eyes and had to re-learn to paint and draw. He continues to complete private commissions in painting and drawing and recently featured his work in the L.A. BE MINE art show sponsored by L'art Pour L'art.

The Awakenings Foundation was officially incorporated as an Illinois non-profit in July, 2010, but its roots go back to 1998, when Jean Cozier, Founder and President, created the Judith Dawn Memorial Fund for the Arts. In 2008 and 2009, Jean created and co-hosted a series of “Art of Survival” events to showcase the talents of rape and sexual abuse survivors who were artists, writers and musicians. At the same time, applications to the Judith Dawn Fund reached a peak, many from working artists, musicians and writers. With so many outstanding applicants to the program, Jean realized there was a need to create a permanent home for artists/survivors who could share their works with the public. Leithaus music classes with Mr. Singer 45-minute mixed ages classes for six months to six years olds and their caregivers. Learn music by playing music. Mr. Singer leads class on guitar and harmonica while highlighting featured instruments every week such as: autoharp, piano, drum set and electronic instruments. Who We Are. 2nd Story is a collective of story-makers and story-lovers working together to build community through the power of storytelling. We host events (around Chicago and beyond) that fuse page, stage, and sound to deliver a unique, live, literary/theatrical experience. What We Do. We host story-sharing experiences in the form of both performances and workshops/classes. A typical show consists of four (or three or five) stories dispersed throughout the evening like courses in a meal. The stories range from the serious to the silly and can at once provoke and entertain. Each story is combined with expertly-performed musical accompaniment or well-placed audio accents to enhance the spoken story and the pregnant pause. Our venues are as varied as our stories, and run the gamut from intimate wine bars to spacious performance halls. Ditto for our storytellers, who come from all walks of life. A pastor, a bartender, a child psychiatrist, and a lawyer…their individual stories help to bridge the gap between the personal and the universal to break down the walls between artist and audience. We also run classes and workshops, in order to empower individuals to be the storytellers of their own lives. Our training program is based in our core beliefs of the power of ensemble and sharing stories, and is geared both towards artists/writers/performers seeking to hone their technique and individuals with no experience at all who just love what we do and want to deepen their own creative practice.
