Rauta is the Finnish word, iron. Starting out as a specialty metallurgical company in 2014, ME&M represented "mining, exploration, and metallurgy." The vision for the company has evolved to include research and consulting services in the fields of soil science, water, and environmental quality. The company was founded by Alix Hakala M.S., who has an extensive research and educational background. Hakala earned bachelors degrees from the University of Wyoming in 2008 in Chemistry and Spanish. He then followed with duel Master of Science degrees in Soil Science and Water Resource Management from the same institution in 2011. His research foci included manganese and glyphosate interactions in sugar beets and soybeans while in graduate school, and published papers in areas of soils and plant sciences as well as statistics. Hakala transitioned to the engineering and consulting sector after completing school, where he served as an environmental scientist for a top engineering firm in Wyoming. After 5 years experience in this field, he wanted to transition again to private consulting. Rauta was formed to provide this service along with a full service analytical laboratory in Glenrock, Wyoming.
