The School at Columbia University is a private K-8 school affiliated with Columbia University. Students are drawn equally from the Morningside Heights, Manhattan/Upper West Side/Harlem community and from the faculty and staff of the university. Currently there are three divisions: Primary (K-2), Intermediate (3-5) and Middle (6-8). Each division has its own Division Head and there is one Head of School. It is located at 110th Street and Broadway in the New York City borough of Manhattan.HistoryIn 2000, Columbia University decided to develop a school that would serve the needs of its faculty and would also serve the community. The 13-story site (a mixed faculty housing and school building) was decided on in 2001 and construction started later that year. The school officially opened on September 17, 2003.AdmissionsThe school has an admissions policy that is unusual for private schools in New York City in that incoming children are not screened for ability. Each incoming kindergarten class is made up of two groups of children, one group is drawn from the children of Columbia University faculty and staff, while the second group is drawn from the community of New York City School Districts 3 and 5. Children of Columbia faculty and staff are chosen through a mix of retention requirements, cross-department representation and a lottery. Children from the community are selected through a random lottery with no screening and every incoming community child is eligible for financial aid on a needs basis. After winning the lottery, parents can schedule a tour the school and children are invited for a 2-hour visit where they spend time in a kindergarten classroom with other applicants

Radical C.U.N.T.S. (College Undergraduates Not Tolerating Sexism) is an activist group on Columbia and Barnard’s campus dedicated to eradicating sexism and its manifold manifestations. We undertake this project with a decidedly intersectional approach. We practice our feminism as a response to interlocking systems of oppression, emphasizing the ever-present dialogue between social identities, including but not limited to race, class, gender expression, sexual orientation, ability, age, nationality, culture, and religion. We identify ourselves as radical activists insofar as we imagine and activate outside of that which is given to construct that which can be. The relationship between critical discourse and meaningful action is central to our method. In equipping each other with adequate discursive tools, we are better prepared to challenge, combat and ultimately dismantle the matrices of oppression. We see the university space as a central node in our social landscape, and we begin here with the understanding that activism produces rippling effects. We aim to activate on a continuum: from campus to city to nation. We activate ourselves as embodiments of bold, unapologetic, determined sites of resistance and human experience. We are a committee in the IRC (Intercultural Resource Center) and as such, we are committed to providing a safe and supportive environment in which students from all social identities and backgrounds including race, ethnicity, socio-economic class, gender identity/expression, sexual orientation, and religious affiliation can feel comfortable discussing important issues affecting their respective communities.

Come and join the fun of music making with your baby, toddler or preschooler. Adults, regardless of their musical ability, can help create an environment that supports children in achieving basic music competence. Children of mixed ages participate at their own level by singing, moving, chanting, listening, and exploring musical instruments. Parents and caregivers participate with the children and receive music development information about their own child. Together, music allows for fun and family bonding.

We cordially invite you to join the Society for the Oral Reading of Greek and Latin Literature and to share our experience in hearing and reproducing the true sounds of Homer, Vergil, and the other Classical authors. It is generally acknowledged that the literature of the Greeks and Romans is among the most beautiful and powerful expressions of the human mind. It is also generally known that this body of literature was created with the intention of being orally performed and aurally experienced by a group of listeners, large or small, and was not intended to be read silently with the eyes alone. The element of sound is therefore fundamental to a full esthetic experience and understanding of Greek and Latin literature. And yet, the traditional method of teaching Greek and Latin ignores or neglects the sounds of these languages, as if they were of little or no importance, thus depriving students of the basic literary reward of hearing and reproducing beautiful poetry. It is as if students were to study Mozart solely from musical scores and not be given the opportunity of hearing his music.
