It is named for Nathaniel Bowditch, a noted early 19th-century astronomer and mathematician. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

The Mosaic School West is a small early childhood program that invites children from all families to learn, explore, question and bond. We believe that each child is unique, naturally curious and ready for independence. This step in their development is crucial to the way we approach our curriculum. We look at each group enrolled and find the needs of each student. All children learn in their own unique way. At The Mosaic School West we will celebrate their need for autonomy, while challenging and supporting their needs to be social. We feel learning can be fun, challenging and successful. 15 months-5 years
In the Fall of 2013 I will start the school with one group of beginners. As I add a class of beginners each year, and that first group grows into advanced players, I hope to plan many fun events, and join in the exciting things that are happening in Jamaica Plain. I envision playing at first Thursdays, Wake up the Earth, and other local events.
