Old Town School of Folk Music

4544 N Lincoln Ave
Chicago, IL 60625

The Old Town School of Folk Music is a Chicago teaching and performing institution that launched the careers of many notable folk music artists. Founded by Folk musicians Frank Hamilton and Win Stracke, and Dawn Greening, the School opened in the Old Town neighborhood of Chicago in 1957 (the original location has since been demolished). It began by offering guitar and banjo lessons in a communal teaching style and hosting performances by well-known folk musicians. Currently the school is led by executive director Bau Graves and has an enrollment of about 6,000 students per week, 2,700 of them children.HistoryFoundingThe Old Town School was originally founded by musicians Win Stracke and Frank Hamilton and opened December 1, 1957. Stracke was a classically trained singer and Hamilton was a young multi-instrumentalist and teacher of folk music; Hamilton had previously studied under Bess Lomax Hawes, daughter of folklorist John Lomax. Stracke and Hamilton met at the Gate of Horn nightclub in Chicago where they were both performing. Together Hamilton and Stracke developed a classroom technique based upon traditional oral and folk teaching methods: listening, watching, trial and error, and playing by ear. Where other music schools taught sight reading and performance, Stracke and Hamilton wanted the Old Town School "method" to retain its emphasis on participation and development of aural skills. Early Classes were held in a dining room at the home of co-founder Dawn Greening

Route 66 Theatre Company introduces, develops, produces, and exports new work for the stage. The road begins with our new play development process and reaches west, where our World and Chicago Premiere shows are given an advocate for further regional productions along the road less traveled from Chicago to Los Angeles. Our unique approach to the landscape of new plays and musicals incorporates is based on four stages of momentum: Introduce, Develop, Produce, and Export. We introduce new work to Chicago audiences through our Reading Series, inviting our patrons into the artistic conversation. We develop new work with a rigorous workshop process that brings fresh eyes and trusted collaborators to the table to bring out the very best in a script. We produce not only World Premieres, but also Chicago Premieres of plays we’ve workshopped after their initial premieres in other cities. Finally, we export the new work through our partnership with Vs Theatre in Los Angeles and a developing network of theatres in cities along Route 66, advocating for a longer life and regional audience for the plays in which we believe so strongly. Central to Route 66’s approach to new play development is the essential participation of the actor, cast not just for a role, but for their voice in the collaborative process. Route 66 operates under the guidelines of the Actors’ Equity Association and believes that providing a good salary with health and pension benefits is vital to creating a solid and welcoming home for all our collaborating artists.

Trellis at The Greenhouse Theater Center

Chicago, IL 60614

(773) 404-7336

Founded in 2008, The Greenhouse Theater Center, NFP, continues its commitment to maintain a theater building and artists’ space rich in Chicago theater tradition. Located at 2257 N. Lincoln Avenue in Chicago’s prominent Lincoln Park neighborhood, it was the original home for such theater luminaries as the groundbreaking Body Politic Theater and Victory Gardens Theater. The Wendy and William Spatz Charitable Foundation purchased the theater building from Victory Gardens Theater with a promise to maintain the current function of the building as a multi-stage theater space. The Greenhouse Theater Center is as an “incubator” for small to mid-size theater companies. Its name is a natural progression with a nod to its historic roots and its concept renews the promise of attracting new and diverse art and artists to the center of Lincoln Park. The Greenhouse Theater Center is proud of its commitment to this tradition and to its mission. This multi-stage artists’ space provides four stages, dressing and staging areas, as well as, office space for resident companies to grow. The Greenhouse’s in-house performing arts renters produce and present their own plays and seasons of theater, educational activities and alternative forms of entertainment which provide an environment lush in support, healthy levels of peer competition, communication and a place to make fundamental associations with other companies, their members and their patrons. The result of this “greenhouse effect” is the ability to, literally “grow” theater companies from the ground up in size of budget, membership, board affiliations, patronage, and audience attendance. The Greenhouse Theater Center’s residency program offers further benefits to resident theater companies by offering prime performance slots, rehearsal opportunities, supplementary marketing privileges, and fiscal savings in addition to the common benefits shared by all renters. The Greenhouse Theater Center maintains its focus on being a community center, not only for the Lincoln Park neighborhood, but also for the larger community of Chicago and beyond. Providing warm and welcoming spaces for groups to meet, perform, communicate, and learn is central to our mission. All of the Greenhouse’s lobbies and performance spaces function in a variety of different ways and accommodate a number of different group sizes. As accessibility to the four stages is essential, the building meets ADA standards. The Greenhouse Theater Center would be nothing but brick and mortar without the history, creative energy, drive, unbridled talent, and vision of the artistic community in which it exists. The Greenhouse Theater Center honors the artistic impact of each, and every theater company that has graced its four stages over the past decades, and looks toward a future where the heartbeat of Chicago theater can be heard around the world.
