The Art + Soul Oakland, the City of Oakland’s flagship festival that launched downtown’s cultural and economic renaissance, heats up with the inaugural Oaktown Throwdown BBQ competition on Saturday, August 2. Professional pit masters from all over California and backyard teams drawn from the local community will show off their skills while competing for cash prizes. The public will be invited to view the action up close and if desired, sample and then vote for their favorite fare (additional sampling fee will apply). In a perfect pairing, the Bay Area Blues Society continues its annual Art + Soul tradition with a rousing showcase featuring veteran Oakland blues artists and Bay Area blues legend Tommy Castro and The Painkillers. Tens of thousands are expected for the popular two-day event, now in its 14th year, packed with sensational music, food, fun, dance and art in beautiful downtown Oakland. Blues, R&B, Soul, Funk, Gospel, Rock, Latin, Turf and Urban/World Dance will take place on four stages.

Kraken Con is a three-day convention being held November 18-20, 2016 at the Oakland Convention Center in Oakland CA which features anime, cartoons and comics with a heavy emphasis on whimsy, imagination and the creative process. Our goal is to ensure attendees have an enjoyable experience via great panels, cool guests, fun events and awesome merchandise.

Crate Oakland is a permanent pop-up restaurant that reinvents every couple of weeks giving a rotating home to up-and-coming chef and artist talent and their ideas.. Crate is located in the heart of Downtown Oakland, on 14th street Between Broadway and Franklin Streets, Directly Across the street from Frank Ogawa Plaza/ City Hall and 200 feet away from 12th St. Bart Station / Ac transit main bus Terminal. Every couple of weeks, the restaurant changes – a new chef rotates in and introduces a new menu concept. Simultaneously, a new interior stylist re-designs the interior’s transformable design elements. Essentially, Crate is a limited time only Restaurant, where a new restaurant is born every couple of weeks. Up-and-coming chefs and designers, like yourself, get to take the reins for three months and show the city of Oakland what you’re made of! The 1700 square foot kitchen is available for monthly rental for chefs, caterers, and cooks The 1900 square foot pop-up restaurant is available for chefs, caterers, and artist.

One day – Seven Hours – 145 Writers – 70 Events Inside City Hall, more than 100 novelists, poets, historians, philosophers, journalists, and activists will engage event-goers in panels, interviews, and open debate. Children’s Area – Music – Booksellers – Food The outdoor portion of the festival, on Frank Ogawa Plaza, includes a dedicated children’s area with performances from Children’s Fairyland, “favorite-stories” read by librarians from the Oakland Public Library, and book-making projects courtesy of the Museum of Children’s Arts. There will be live music and readings on the amphitheater all day. Booksellers, magazine publishers, and local literary organizations will have booths on the plaza; food trucks will provide nourishment.
