The Landmark Center in Boston, Massachusetts is a commercial center situated in a limestone and brick art deco building built in 1929 for Sears, Roebuck and Company. It features a 200ft tower and, as Sears Roebuck and Company Mail Order Store, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated as a Boston Landmark.Derelict for a time before being reopened in fall 2000, the building now houses retail stores (including REI and Staples), a 13-screen movie theater, a 1,700-space parking garage, a sports complex and a day care center; as well as office space largely occupied by tenants related to the medical field and the nearby Longwood Medical and Academic Area: the anchor, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts occupied the majority until its departure in 2015, while most of the additional offices are rented by Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health. Boston Children's Hospital has administrative offices as well, in addition to Harvard Pilgrim Health Care.
Longwood is a light rail stop on the MBTA Green Line "D" Branch, located on Chapel Street in Brookline, Massachusetts just north of Longwood Avenue. It serves the western end of the Longwood Medical Area, the Colleges of the Fenway, and residential areas of Brookline. The station opened with the rest of the line on July 4, 1959. After renovation work completed in 2009, Longwood station is fully handicapped accessible from both Chapel Street and Riverway Park.HistoryOriginal stationsThe Boston and Worcester Railroad opened a 1.4mile branch from Brookline Junction to Brookline on April 10, 1848. There was one intermediate stations on the branch - Longwood just south of Longwood Avenue. The Charles River Branch Railroad extended the Brookline Branch to Newton Upper Falls in November 1852 and to Needham in June 1853, keeping the original B&W station for its service.The Sears Chapel was built in 1861 and the Church of Our Savior in 1868; sometime that decade Chapel station was opened as a flag stop located at Carlton Street. The Boston and Albany Railroad bought back the line, then part of the New York and New England Railroad, in February 1883. It was double-tracked and extended to the B&A main at Riverside; "Newton Circuit" service via the Highland Branch and the main line began on May 16, 1886.
The Countway Community Garden was founded in 2012 by a group of staff, students, and faculty from Harvard School of Public Health and Harvard Medical School to provide the Longwood campus with opportunities for education and hands-on experience relating to urban agriculture, sustainability, and health. It is the only garden affiliated with a Harvard Library. The Garden grows medicinal herbs with specific ties to New England, which are used to teach historical and current herbal or herb-derived treatments. Additionally, the garden grows “snack-able” vegetables, culinary herbs, and flowers which are shared with volunteers and visitors, alike. Collaboration has been a focal point of this project since its humble beginnings. Garden volunteers are affiliated with different departments within the Countway Library, including The Center for Biomedical Informatics, the Center for the History of Medicine, Harvard Catalyst, and Harvard Health Publications. They work closely with the two other Harvard gardens—located in Harvard Square and at the Harvard Divinity School—as well as with the Longwood Sustainability team and HMS/HSPH Green Teams. The Garden is also connected with communities outside of the Harvard network, such as the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. In collaboration with Prof. Lana Dvorkan (Director of Applied Natural Products, MCPHS), students have created a number of different podcasts based on the medicinal herbs featured in the Garden. These podcasts are available online, and will soon be accessible (using QR codes) within the garden itself. The Garden has been featured in the Harvard Gazette, Harvard Library Blog, and the Harvard Sustainability Blog. This summer, the Harvard Library will be starting a series that highlights news and events from the Countway Community Garden on the Harvard Library website.
The Winand Toussaint House is a historic house at 203 Aspinwall Avenue in Brookline, Massachusetts. The 2-1/2 story wood frame house was built in 1881 by Winand Toussaint, a Belgian immigrant who worked in the furniture business, and may have been the designer of the house. It is an architecturally eclectic work, with elements of Second Empire (the mansard roof), Stick style, and Gothic Revival. The house has a cupola, and perhaps most distinctively, the house's corners are chamfered, with the main entrance at one of the angled ends.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
Fenwood Road is a station on the MBTA Green Line "E" Branch in Boston, Massachusetts. Boston Children's Hospital is a 395-bed comprehensive center for pediatric health care. As one of the largest pediatric medical centers in the United States, Boston Children's offers a complete range of health care services for children from birth through 21 years of age. (Our Advanced Fetal Care Center can begin interventions at 15 weeks gestation, and in some situations, we treat adults.) Boston Children's records approximately 24,943 inpatient admissions each year, and our 228 specialized clinical programs schedule more than 557,620 visits annually. Additionally, the hospital performed 26,534 surgical procedures and 158,791 radiological examinations last year. Boston Children's is home to the world's largest research enterprise based at a pediatric hospital. More than 1,100 scientists, including nine members of the National Academy of Sciences, 11 on-staff members of the Institute of Medicine and 9 members of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, comprise our research community. Current initiatives have attracted a record $225 million in annual funding, including more federal funding than any other pediatric facility. In the John F. Enders Pediatric Research Laboratories, named for the Boston Children's researcher and Nobel Prize recipient who cultured the polio and measles viruses, hundreds of laboratory researchers and physician investigators search for answers to some of the most perplexing diseases. In 2003, a generous philanthropic gift made the 295,000 square foot Karp Family Research Laboratories possible. The building increased our research space by more than 60 percent. Our programs provide pathways to careers in healthcare along with intensive and comprehensive, educational employment and mentoring opportunities. In collaboration with other DFCI departments, we develop and deliver learning experiences for both adults and youth in order to fill the pipeline to allied health, research and healthcare administration careers with well prepared, highly skilled, engaged and diverse candidates from our local communities. Please read on to discover more about each program: • Student Training Programs: In an effort to “grow our own,” Workforce Development identifies, manages and coordinates initiatives to introduce, expose and develop the next generation of healthcare professionals through our summer jobs programs, school-year internship programs, and job shadow experiences. We serve students from three Boston Public Schools: the Madison Park Technical Vocational High School, John D. O’Bryant School of Math & Science, and Fenway High School. • Adult Development Programs: Primarily serving front-line and entry level staff, Workforce Development manages initiatives and facilitates curriculum to support the acquiring of and/or improving of the necessary skills and knowledge to advance one’s career. Curriculum offerings include School At Work® and Pre College Math and English. Other services include career advising and academic coaching. • Community Engagement: Identify opportunities to create, sustain and further enhance DFCI’s visibility within the Boston community.
The PLGA Foundation established the Pediatric Low-Grade Astrocytoma Program (PLGA Program) at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in 2007. This is the only dedicated pediatric low-grade glioma Program in America, and since has grown into a multidisciplinary and multi-institutional Program, with collaborations initiated internally at Dana-Farber, nationally with other institutions in America, and internationally in Europe.
The NIDCAP Federation International (NFI) promotes the Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program (NIDCAP). NIDCAP is the most comprehensive, evidence-based model of developmentally supportive care and assessment for preterm and fullterm newborns and their families in the hospital, and the transition home. Challenge and Opportunity Research has documented the beneficial effect of NIDCAP in terms of shorter intensive care and overall hospital stay, better weight gain and improved behavioral outcomes that endure beyond infancy. Studies have also documented that the NIDCAP approach enhances brain structure and function when measured by sophisticated medical techniques such as EEG and MRI. Challenge and Opportunity The incidence of preterm birth, worldwide, is rapidly increasing. In the US, the incidence of prematurity currently stands at 12.7%. Over 25% of all preterm infants are also born too small for their gestational age. These infants present immediate and significant challenges to their parents and to their caregivers in Newborn Intensive Care Units. They are hypersensitive, difficult to feed, and difficult to calm. More than 50% will go on to develop learning and emotional disabilities, requiring special education and mental health services. The challenge is even greater in developing countries.
Our center brings together medical and surgical experts supported by a full-service laboratory and radiology services. Our transplant teams have access to all medical and surgical specialties in the hospital for consultations.
