I received my doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Baylor University and completed my postdoctoral training through the Child Psychology Fellowship at the UC Davis Medical Center. My specialty lies in working with children, adolescents, and their families to address a range of problems, including depression, anxiety, grief, high-functioning autism, trauma, and adjustment difficulties. I also have extensive experience in conducting psychological assessments to address concerns regarding ADHD, learning disorders, and cognitive difficulties, as well as social and emotional difficulties. As a therapist, it is important for me to maintain communication with both parents and children in order to tailor therapeutic interventions to meet their ongoing goals and needs. My therapeutic orientation is based in attachment theory, but also informed by cognitive-behavioral approaches and evidenced based practice. This enables me to provide concrete and practical interventions, while still being mindful of the child’s relational context. My experience and training in play therapy also allows me to work with younger children in a unique and developmentally appropriate way.
The Art of Hairstyling began at a very young age for Joi with family members being her first muses. Braiding was the beginning and she gained school wide popularity in high school for mastering different braiding styles. Joi decided that she wanted to take her passion to the next level so she enrolled at Vatterott College for the Cosmetology Program in 2008. After graduation, she went on to work at Great Clips, Remy Hair Salon and is currently running her own business under the Voila! Studio Salon umbrella. Joi has been a licensed cosmetologist in the State of Missouri for 6 years. Her work has been seen at the Black Women Rock 2011 Fashion Show, Zaneta Bailey’s Fashion Show and the 2013 Missouri Black Expo. Staying up on the latest trends is important Joi therefore she has continued her education in areas of crochet weaving, braidless sew in and fusion weaving. Her goals for 2013 are to become a Certified Keratin Complex Specialist and advance her education on Cutting and Coloring. “I love working with natural hair. That is where it originates, encouraging the health of the hair and helping it grow.” says Joi.
